Junior Statesmen Foundation - Grants Program Manager

Founded in 1934, the Junior State of America and the Junior Statesmen Foundation (JSA) strengthens American democracy by educating and preparing high school students for life-long involvement and responsible leadership in a democratic society. In the student-run Junior State and JSA summer schools participants learn statesmanship as they engage in political discourse. They cultivate democratic leadership skills, challenge one another to think critically, advocate their own opinions, develop respect for opposing views and learn to rise above self-interest to promote the public good.

Grants Program Manager

The Grants Program Manager will have primary responsibility for managing and expanding JSA’s grants program and will report to the Chief Development Officer. The JSA organizational budget is $5.2 million: 80% fee-for-service, 15% grants, and 5% individual donors. We seek an experienced and enthusiastic grants professional to join our hard-working, energetic and fun team to build on our success to shape and lead a robust grants program that will increase our impact and effectiveness as part of a larger organizational strategy to expand contributed income. The Grants Program Manager will be a skilled writer, communicator, thought-leader and team player with a record of success, will have a passionate belief in the organizational mission, and a desire to make a difference in the world.

Responsibilities:


Research, Writing, Funder Relationships:

  • Research, identify and prioritize funding prospects
  • Refine the basic grant template language that states the organizational value proposition and impact
  • Work with appropriate staff to gather necessary information for proposals and reports
  • Write letters of inquiry, proposals and reports
  • Work with CDO and CEO to build and deepen relationships with funders
  • Stay connected to general and philanthropic trends with youth engagement in politics and civic education

Grants Administration:

  • Lead and manage the process of building internal systems and processes for managing all aspects of the grants program including prospecting, cultivation, writing and application, implementation, reporting, stewardship and renewal
  • Utilizing a CRM database (SalesForce) and hard-copy files, develop systems for information management, including relationship building with funders
  • Manage grants calendar & lifecyle
  • Lead a collaborative process with program staff and leadership to implement and report on grants effectively and efficiently
  • Produce status reports for staff and Board

General Support for development department (10%)

  • Support for individual donor program including gift entry and acknowledgment
  • Support for management of development department reporting, including building and updating ad hoc and recurring reports

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in related field or equivalent; Master’s degree a plus
  • Outstanding writing skills
  • At least 3 years experience writing grant proposals and reports
  • Track record of securing grants of $50,000+
  • Experience working with and managing teams
  • Experience managing grants processes or interest in learning
  • Experience with and high degree of comfort with budgets and financial data
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and a good sense of humor
  • Highly skilled with Excel and PowerPoint, and CRM; SalesForce experience a plus
  • Adept at creating presentations and summarizing data
  • Highly organized self-starter with the ability to manage and balance multiple priorities
  • Work experience in youth development or secondary education a plus
  • Familiar with Bay Area foundation community preferred

Physical Requirements:

  • Some overnight or weekend travel may be required periodically
  • Office-casual office environment; professional appearance required for contacts with external stakeholders
  • Commute to San Mateo office (easy access from CalTrain and 101); work at home negotiable on an occasional basis ,based on the needs of the organization
