Membership Coordinator

American Civil Liberties Union - Membership Coordinator-Membership Department The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), founded in 1920, is a nationwide, nonprofit, nonpartisan organization with more than 500,000 members dedicated to the principles of liberty and equality embodied in the U.S. Constitution. The Membership Department of the National office in New York City is seeking applicants for the full-time position of Membership Coordinator.

OVERVIEW

The ACLU has experienced historic growth in its fundraising programs. The majority of the annual budget is raised by contributions from individual members plus grants from foundations. The ACLU’s national office and its affiliates work cooperatively to raise funds from members and donors, with the national office having primary responsibility for direct marketing efforts. The Membership Coordinator reports to the Deputy Director of Development and will assist directly with those marketing efforts.

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Track and maintain overall department budgets and expense reports; liaise with accounting department on reconciliation of monthly expenses. Maintain filing of invoices and cost information.
  • Work with outside list management firm to review and approve list rental requests from charitable organizations; work with list management firm and to set up processes for clearing and tracking requests.
  • Assist in the creation and maintenance of fundraising reports and analysis.
  • Create and maintain systems for easy access to direct mail samples and other department records.
  • Assist in the review and tracking of outgoing email communications, including proofreading emails and web pages and testing links and web pages.
  • Monitor a variety of incoming email inboxes, routing inquiries to appropriate staff and reporting on constituent feedback.
  • Proofread direct marketing and other fundraising copy.
  • Coordinate and schedule meetings, travel arrangements, and appointments.
  • Utilize fundraising database to locate and assist in maintenance of donor records.
  • Coordinate tasks and projects under the direction of the Deputy Director of Development as well as to other staff members in the department.
  • Respond to affiliate inquiries and requests for information and other customer service questions via phone, mail and email.
  • Handle other duties as needed.
EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred and a minimum of three (3) years of relevant work experience, preferably in a development/non-profit setting or equivalent.
  • Strong organizational skills, multi-tasking skills and attention to detail.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to compose, edit, and proof correspondence and documents.
  • High degree of proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point and Internet usage.
  • Must be conscientious, exercise good judgment and have the ability to represent the organization and interface with all levels of staff, volunteers and donors while maintaining tact, diplomacy and confidentiality.
  • Commitment to the mission and goals of the ACLU.

COMPENSATION

The ACLU offers compensation commensurate with experience and within the parameters of the ACLU compensation scale.
