Job Summary
Produce the University of Chicago Magazine's Alumni News sections - six issues per year. Write, edit and create layout for "Peer Review". Act as a liaison with volunteer class correspondents and work with the Alumni Association to recruit new correspondents. Manage correspondent deadlines.
Edit 200- to 1,500-word columns submitted by 60-plus class correspondents - approximately 20 printed pages each issue. Checking for consistency with Magazine style, correct usage, logical reasoning and appropriate content. Contact class correspondents when a problem with class notes submissions arise, suggesting appropriate edits.
Working from materials submitted by alumni, write up class news for alumni who do not have a class correspondent. Write sidebars for "Peer Review" section for several class years. Write Notes and Releases pages. Compile and assign obituaries. Lay out classified ads page. Find appropriate art for back-of-book sections.
Coordinate College class correspondents system; forward class news to volunteer correspondents. Manage correspondent deadlines. Supervise alumni books submissions. Oversee weekly input of alumni books into "Goodreads". Select books, films and albums to be featured in "Releases" print edition. Track submissions, forward books to library or Alumni House as appropriate. Supervise Deaths section. Track death notices. Track fact checking.
Using InDesign, lay out "Peer Review" section of Magazine, making cuts as necessary. Enter final corrections into layout. Upload completed files to prepress house. Review and make author's alterations online. Using Griffin, check U of C degrees and other biographical information of alumni. Use online and other sources to fact-check "Alumni News" materials.
Manage Magazine's classified-advertising program. Prepare classified ad section in InDesign. Record advertisements, bill advertisers and prepare payments for deposit. Forward correspondence to appropriate offices or contacts. Respond to telephone, email and mail requests. Coordinate campus distribution. Assist editors with correspondence, in-house advertising and other projects as assigned. May oversee the work of freelancers, editorial assistants and student assistants.
Participate in story- and issue-plannin090g meetings. Participate in story editing, proofreading and fact checking of features and other Magazine departments. Assist in general editorial work in story planning, copy editing and proofreading. Read several drafts of all magazine materials, looking for consistency of style, correct usage and logical reasoning. Review Google alerts and websites to research story ideas for upcoming issues. With experience, write other articles as assigned.
Education
Bachelor's degree or higher required.
Experience
Minimum two years of relevant professional work experience in writing, editing or similar work required.
