DESCRIPTION
The American Diabetes Association is seeking an experienced professional with donor relations and communications experience to create stewardship tools and implement the donor relations plan. The scope of the work includes donor relations, stewardship and related communications. The Development Writer & Donor Relations Manager will assist in developing and coordinating a comprehensive outreach and communication strategy to advance diabetes research, research foundation, and major & planned giving efforts.
The Manager will coordinate closely with the Sci Med division, publications and other staff; coordinate, write, edit and oversee the production of all aspects of stewardship material and publications.
Specific Functions:
Serve as liaison to Communications Department to oversee production of Forefront magazine; develop, write and/or edit scientific and lay publications for print or web content; help achieve department’s major and planned giving goals by assisting in the solicitation of department’s prospective and current donors by writing and editing appeals, letters of inquiry, responsible for the review and control of all gift acknowledgments, ensures donors are acknowledged by preparing individualized correspondence and strategic communications; acts as a liaison to Gift Officers to provide stewardship assistance; writes and edits grants and proposals; implements the strategic communications plan in multiple mediums in a timely fashion, including social media sites, annual report to donors, e-blasts, yearend reminders, gift acknowledgments, web pages, invitations, campaign newsletter updates, and press releases; serve as the department’s liaison with other Divisions;collaborate on projects, including (but not limited to) articles in Diabetes Forecast magazine, Research Foundation advertisements in scientific journals, and communication regarding Scientific Sessions.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
- Bachelor's degree in communication or related field or equivalent experience
- Master's degree preferred
- 3-4 Years of progressive experience in writing, editing or publishing
- Experience in stewardship and donor relations
- Excellent writing and oral communications skills
- Strong working knowledge of all media channels including web and social media channels
- Ease relating to scientists, publishers, editors, writers and other media colleagues
- Ease relating to influential, well-known individuals and high-dollar donors
- High energy, goal-directed, task-driven, results-measured work ethic
- Flexible multi-tasker
- Excellent analytical skills, organizational and time management skills, including attention to detail
- Computer proficiency in Windows Operating systems, MS Office, knowledge of and demonstrated efficiency with relationship management databases, and research databases
- Experience in drafting, revising and/or editing documents submitted to donors, foundations or corporations, including letters of inquiry, proposals, reports and correspondence.
- Successful, published author, preferably in the scientific area.
- Successful planning, coordinating and managing the proposal preparation process for non-profit or government agency.
