ABOUT WHEDco: The Women’s Housing and Economic Development Corporation
(WHEDco) has worked for nearly twenty years to build a more beautiful,
equitable and economically vibrant Bronx. WHEDco reaches over 35,000
people annually through energy-efficient, healthy and affordable homes;
early childhood education and youth development; home-based childcare
microenterprise and food business incubation; and family support.
POSITION SUMMARY: WHEDco is seeking a Controller to provide leadership in
accounting, financial reporting, grant management, and internal control
functions. In addition to overseeing disbursements, receipts, invoicing,
payroll and standard bookkeeping procedures, the postholder will also
support the forecasting and budgeting process as well as implement new
fiscal policies and procedures.
The right candidate will have the potential for
organization-wide impact and have the opportunity to lend expertise in
an increasingly complex financial operation. This role will enjoy
tremendous independence and latitude while working with key stakeholders
in the organization.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
General Ledger:
- Oversees all financial transactional activity,
including accounts payable, accounts receivable and payroll and ensures
that all financial transactions and journal entries are recorded both
timely and accurately in accordance with organization policies, GAAP and
governmental regulations;
- Maintains the structure and ensures maximization of
accounting software;
- Performs key monthly account analyses and investigates
variations.
Compliance and Reporting:
- Formulates, recommends and implements sounds fiscal
policies, procedures and internal controls;
- Coordinates the preparation of monthly, quarterly and
annual financial statements and reports;
- Serves as primary liaison with external regulatory
agencies and external audit firm;
- Ensures proper close-out of grants.
Management:
- Builds and maintains a strong accounting team to
support the organization;
- Leads and participates in special projects that
further the goals of the fiscal department;
- Stays abreast of trends and changes in the accounting
field;
- Collaborates with senior management and staff to meet
the transactional and reporting requirements of the organization;
- Monitors and forecasts cash requirements;
- Provides support to annual budget process.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Minimum 5-7 years of experience in Non
Profit financial management/accounting preferred;
- Master's degree in Accounting, Business
or another field of study relevant to the position, and/or CPA;
- Experience with government contract
reporting, especially expense allocations;
- Extensive budget management
experience;
- Familiarity with the fundraising
process;
- Interest in community development;
- Strong problem solving, analytical,
and decision making skills;
- Excellent verbal and written
communication skills;
- Must have strong computer skills;
- Experience in managing the finances
of a real estate tax credit project;
- Preferred knowledge of Fund EZ.
