The Hampton Roads Community Foundation is the largest grantmaker and scholarship provider in southeastern Virginia and the oldest of 27 community foundations in the Commonwealth of Virginia. With total assets of approximately $246 million and assets under investment of $220 million, it was formed through the merger on January 1, 2010 of The Norfolk Foundation (founded in 1950) and The Virginia Beach Foundation (founded in 1987). The Foundation’s mission is to inspire philanthropy and transform the quality of life in southeastern Virginia. Its vision is to be the premier provider of philanthropic services in the region offering community impact through grants and scholarships, regional leadership through focus on community needs and initiatives, and personal philanthropy that helps donors achieve their charitable goals.
As the Chief Development Officer of the Foundation, the Vice President for Development has operational responsibility for growing the Foundation’s resources through a comprehensive development program that includes cultivation of the professional advisor community, donor prospect identification and research, donor cultivation and stewardship, and relationship-building and marketing. The vice president works closely with the Board of Directors, particularly its Development Committee, and the President & CEO in establishing ambitious but realistic development goals that are linked to the Foundation’s larger strategic vision. Reporting directly to the President & CEO, the vice president serves as a senior member of her management team.
We seek a proven leader whose passion for service to the community has been demonstrated throughout his or her professional career. The ideal candidate will possess extraordinary interpersonal skills that are manifested in a high level of written and oral communication, an ability to engage diverse groups of community stakeholders and a caring attitude in working with others. This person should demonstrate a track record of working collaboratively in close-knit stakeholder communities where integrity, sincerity, empathy, personal authenticity and a “listen to learn” style are highly valued.
Ideally, this person will have a strong public-private and nonprofit sector orientation wherein an understanding of governance, capacity building, and community sustainability is at a high level. We seek a leader who can demonstrate an ability to raise community awareness and to engage individuals who have the desire and the capacity to make a significant philanthropic impact in the community.
