Telluride Association - Michigan Program Director

Telluride Association seeks an energetic and capable person who shares TA’s values of self-governance, service, and intellectual inquiry and possesses professional, interpersonal, and administrative skills contributing to success in: cooperating effectively with fellow staff members; interacting fruitfully with a large and diverse body of board members, program participants, and alumni; and representing Telluride Association credibly to institutional partners, funders, and the public.

Telluride Association Overview

Founded in 1911, Telluride Association (“TA”) is a nonprofit organization that creates and fosters educational communities where young people practice leadership and service through democratic self-governance and intellectual inquiry. TA operates two living community for university students, the Michigan Branch of the Telluride Association (“MBTA”) in Ann Arbor, MI and the Cornell Branch of the Telluride Association (“CBTA”) in Ithaca, NY. The Telluride Association also runs summer programs for high school students, the Telluride Association Summer Program (“TASP”) and the Telluride Association Sophomore Seminar (“TASS”).

Michigan Program Director Overview

The general purpose of the Michigan Program Director is to oversee, coordinate, and direct all of Telluride Association’s Ann Arbor-based programs, as well as Telluride’s general development efforts, in collaboration with our active board of trustees. The Michigan Program Director will be an employee of the Telluride Association with direct supervision and reporting requirements to Telluride Association's Administrative Director.

The position will be based at MBTA in Ann Arbor. Flexible scheduling is possible. Occasional evenings and weekends will be required, and occasional travel.

The MPD’s starting salary will be in the range $35-$50K per year, depending on qualification. Telluride Association offers a generous and flexible benefits package.

General Qualifications

  • Leadership, mentoring, and supervisory experience
  • Excellent interpersonal skills; ability to work well in small and large group team situations
  • Ability to work effectively with different constituencies and personalities, including with the collegiate residents of the MBTA scholarship house
  • Demonstrated success working with volunteers, especially volunteer-run committees
  • Experience with development and alumni relations responsibilities
  • Outstanding written and oral communication skills
  • Familiarity with basic computer software: Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, etc.
  • Excellent workflow and time management abilities; ability to manage multiple complex projects simultaneously
  • Belief in the importance of democratic self-governance, intellectual inquiry and service to the community
  • Bachelor’s degree required. Advanced degree or equivalent experience preferred.
  • Familiarity with the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor is a plus.

Job Responsibilities

  • Manage the Ann Arbor office
  • Hire and supervise all Ann Arbor-based staff
  • Oversee and manage the office budgets
  • Maintain an open line of communication between the Ann Arbor office and Telluride Association, the Ithaca office, and MBTA students
  • Ensure the property’s maintenance and well-being
  • Work with staff in the Ithaca office of the Telluride Association on alumni events, associate databases, publications, finances and payroll, and other areas
  • Work with, and monitor, MBTA house projects, activities and budgets
  • Administer MBTA residency scholarships to candidates selected by the Branch
  • Liaise between students and employees at MBTA
  • Supervise, in coordination with appropriate TA committees, the creation of a yearly Proceedings document from TA’s annual Convention
  • Assist with production of a TA newsletter and other publications
  • Assist with TASS and TASP interview coordination
  • Coordinate the Miller International student exchange program
  • Arrange and attend select TA meetings
  • Maintain a positive and open work environment
