Silicon Valley Community Foundation - Corporate Philanthropy Manager

Reporting to the Vice President of Business Services, the Corporate Philanthropy Manager supports the community foundation’s corporate advised funds (CAFs) and corporate customized philanthropy services clients. As part of the externally focused business services team, this individual is responsible for supporting the strategy that seeks to establish Silicon Valley Community Foundation as the premier philanthropic partner for charitably-minded individuals and institutions. The corporate philanthropy manager is responsible for managing a portfolio of corporate donors.

The strategic philanthropy work this individual will engage in is key to the community foundation’s ability to raise $300 million annually and open in excess of 100 funds per year.

Salary range begins at $80,000 a year. Wage commensurate with experience.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Actively manage an assigned portfolio of corporate advised funds. Responsibilities include providing excellent customer service to fund advisors, and being knowledgeable about the full scope of their grantmaking programs, including funding guidelines and criteria, of both CAF advisors and customized philanthropy services clients.
  • Maintain regular and on-demand contact to check on advisors’ and clients’ experiences with the community foundation and to streamline interactions and processes.
  • Provide proactive and regular training to corporate partners on compliance and other regulatory rules regarding their corporate advised fund to ensure they understand how to optimize use of that charitable vehicle. Research compliance questions for advisors and customized philanthropy services clients as needed.
  • Advise upon the development of strategic community grantmaking and corporate social responsibility programs for our corporate partners as requested or required.
  • Evaluate and suggest enhancements to community and international grantmaking and corporate social responsibility programs annually or as requested.
  • Manage CAFs’ grantmaking programs as needed, including extensive proposal review and evaluation of competitive grant cycles. Ensure all submitted applications align with CAF grantmaking strategies, which includes reviewing applications for funding and preparing evaluations of proposals for compliance with the specific guidelines set forth by each individual CAF.
  • Review and provide written evaluation of nonprofits’ programs and projects as needed. Evaluate organizational and programmatic strengths and weaknesses and overall alignment with CAF grantmaking guidelines.
  • As part of the grant review process, conduct site visits or telephone interviews with nonprofit applicants as needed.
  • In concert with other philanthropy managers, assist with the preparation of grant dockets for meetings with CAF fund advisors and employee giving committees.
  • Remain informed about and aware of current corporate philanthropy trends and best practices.
  • Work with CAF advisors and customized philanthropy service clients to develop short- and long-term strategies.
  • Provide support, guidance and expertise on best practices and trends related to employee engagement programs, including information on employee fundraising and matching gift programs and structures.
  • Connect CAFs to community foundation programs, initiatives and information on the community foundation’s grantmaking strategies.
  • Work with fellow business services staff as needed to accomplish department goals.
  • Help respond to daily inquiries from CAF advisors, grant applicants, former grantees, customized philanthropy services clients and other constituents. Collaborate with other community foundation departments regarding corporate funds and customized philanthropy services.
  • Remain informed on legal, accounting, investment and technology issues as they relate to charitable giving and grantmaking regulations and best practices.
  • Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism, English, public policy or administration, business, sociology, education, public health, law or social welfare. Master’s degree in related discipline or equivalent experience in the field is preferred.
  • At least five years experience working in the nonprofit, public and/or corporate sector in project management.
  • Experience as a grantmaker with working knowledge of best grantmaking practices highly desirable.
  • The ability to analyze, interpret and express concepts clearly; the ability to think critically and strategically and conduct research.
  • Ability to accomplish work efficiently and effectively, with a high level of skill and accuracy.
  • Broad knowledge of educational, human service, environmental and arts issues and a working knowledge of nonprofit management.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, as well as keen analytical skills.
  • Experience working directly with donors and familiarity with best practices of donor engagement/donor services desirable.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with an ability to work with diverse people and groups in multicultural environments.
  • Knowledge of nonprofits in San Mateo and Santa Clara counties and ability and willingness to travel throughout the two counties.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office 2010 programs including Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Visio.
  • Previous Blackbaud database experience desired.
  • Comfort in a fast paced, rapidly shifting and evolving workplace required.
  • Proven history of exceeding goals and objectives.
  • Ability to approach situations and challenges with a sense of humor.
