The Association of Baltimore Area Grantmakers (ABAG) announces an exciting opportunity for a motivated, seasoned executive leader. ABAG seeks a President who is passionate about strategic philanthropy and its potential to make a positive difference in the region. The new President will build on the 29 year history of success and evolution of this respected membership organization, which is a resource on grantmaking, network for givers, and voice for philanthropy.
The Organization
The mission of the Association of Baltimore Area Grantmakers (ABAG) is to maximize the impact of philanthropic giving on community life through a growing network of diverse, informed and effective grantmakers is one of the mid-Atlantic region’s premier resources for philanthropy, dedicated to guiding and supporting strategic grantmaking. ABAG provides information and services to the philanthropic and nonprofit communities, convenes grantmakers and other community leaders, and represents the philanthropic sector across the public, private and nonprofit sectors to raise awareness and understanding about the role and impact of philanthropy. The organizational culture at ABAG reflects a positive, collegial, respectful and supportive environment where team and independent work is valued. A 21 - member board of governors guides the organization and its annual budget of approximately $750,000. In addition to the operating budget, ABAG is the fiscal sponsor for several projects and special grants currently totaling over $1 million. The core staff of 6 is supplemented by 8 project staff and consultants. The next President will succeed the long-term President, Betsy Nelson, who is retiring in late 2012 after leading ABAG through 22 years of evolution and success.
The President works closely with the Board of Directors and its committees, and manages a high performing staff to ensure that member needs are well served, and that the strategic goals and objectives of ABAG are accomplished. The position oversees the general and day-to-day operations of the organization.
Desired Key Leadership Experience and Attributes
Ideal candidates will reflect ABAG’s core values and demonstrate an ability to quickly integrate into the community as an engaged, inspiring, collaborative and ethical leader, and will bring a variety of experiences and attributes to ABAG, including: inclusive leadership style; ability to work with confidence and humility; skills and ability to listen, convene, communicate, facilitate and connect in a way that attracts participation even among competing interests; visionary about philanthropy and Baltimore / Maryland; connection to the nonprofit sector beyond philanthropy; ability to think strategically and critically, proactively identify new opportunities, and manage change; demonstrated personal commitment to the value of philanthropy and volunteerism; experience working with a board of directors and developing engaged and effective governance; exceptional interpersonal skills and ability to interact with diverse groups of people; experience with nonprofit fiscal management, budgeting, and operations; and experience working in and making connections in Baltimore or a similar urban environment. Additionally, the idea candidate will have a minimum 10 years professional experience of progressive senior leadership responsibility, management and networking, preferably in a nonprofit organization or foundation; minimum 5 years professional or volunteer experience in philanthropy; demonstrated financial management experience with at least a $1 million budget; experience raising major gifts; proficient in use of current technology and effective electronic communication methods; and Master’s degree in relevant field or Bachelor’s degree with extensive experience.
