Gbowee Peace Foundation Africa - Executive Director
Reports to: President
Direct Reports: Program Manager, Receptionist, and Bookkeeper
Location: Monrovia (Montserrado Co.), Liberia
Travel: Domestic (within Liberia) (5% – 15%); international (10% – 15%)
First Year’s Priorities:
- Thoroughly immersing herself/himself in GPFA – its mission, vision, values, existing programs, stakeholders/partners
- Establish a solid working partnership with the President, Board and current staff in order to bring forth their best ideas and efforts
- Work closely with the Board, President and Program Manager to create the Foundation’s annual operating budget
- In conjunction with the President and Board, develop and implement policies and procedures providing the right operational structure for the Foundation in line with the legal requirements of the Republic of Liberia, Monrovia City Corporation and other domestic or international legal entities (as required); provide on-going oversight and management of those policies and procedures once adopted
- Negotiate and formalize vendor and/or third party contracts
- Conduct prospect research on potential donors (individual, private, governmental, corporate, and in-kind); create a development library for organizing that research for future reference
- Along with the President and Board establish monthly and quarterly goals for targeting and expanding each particular funding segment including institutional and family foundations, individual donors, government and corporate donors
- Create a donor management database system
- Along with the President and Program Manager create professional, high-quality printed materials to use in the marketing of programs and services to current and prospective donors, community partners, media and the general public
- Assist the program staff in developing clear performance goals and benchmarks to easily identify programmatic successes
- Ensure an internal workplace culture of mutual respect and teamwork among all staff, prioritizing training and professional development to foster innovative, high-impact work
- Becoming an effective and visible spokesperson for GPFA, increasing awareness of her mission, vision, values and programs, and broadening GPFAs reputation and visibility among the national, West African and international communities
Ongoing Responsibilities
Supervision and Support (15%)
- Lead the recruitment process for all openings, making final recommendations to the President
- Provide recommendation to the President on all contracts, remuneration, discipline and terminations
- Develop effective human resource recruitment and management strategies
- Ensure that all staff receives regular feedback and supervision through strategic planning sessions and staff development activities
- Approve vacation requests, expense reports and purchase requests for direct reports
- Consciously and consistently develop guidelines and effective communication with and between all staff
Oversight of Programs, Operations, and Finances (35%)
- Ensure the President, Board and staff remains focused on achieving the organization’s vision, mission and strategic priorities, in alignment with organizational values
- Ensure effective systems to track progress and regularly evaluate programs and their components; effectively document and report results to the Board, funders and other constituents
- Working with the President and the Program Manager ensure the Foundation’s programs are effective, cost-efficient, relevant for local needs and aligned with organizational values
- Working with the President and the Board, lead the creation of an annual strategic plans, review/update operating policies, annual budgets, and revenue and expense projections
- Ensure the President and Board receives monthly reports/updates on the Foundation’s income, expenditures, and cash flow
- As the organization grows and develops, ensure an effective management structure is in place to provide leadership and manage change
- Recruit, lead, motivate and mentor the entire team to support organizational goals; ensure effective supervision, guidance, training and development, and evaluation of all staff and create a work environment that will promote a positive morale and employee retention
Leadership of Fundraising and External Relations (50%)
- Ensure the Foundation has sufficient resources to achieve its mission and objectives; lead all fundraising efforts
- Along with the President and Board establish annual and quarterly goals for targeting and expanding each particular funding segment including institutional and family foundations, individual donors, government and corporate events, and in-kind support (donations and/or volunteers)
- Cultivate and sustain relationships and work effectively with a wide variety of constituencies including schools, youth, families, donors, and community partners.
- In the absence of the President authorize all funding contracts signed with external parties or partners
- Create, organizing and maintain the Foundation’s donor database
- Develop and implement strategic PR/marketing and development plans to increase individual donor base; ensure those materials remain current and relevant
- Represent the Foundation at the highest level with government, business, communities and the non-profit sectors to secure resources, and raise the profile of GPFA and the issues that GPFA is seeking to address
- Develop strategic alliances with institutions and organizations beneficial to the achievement of GPFA’s mission and objectives
- Maintain relationships with and regularly convene a broad range of organizations who share the Foundation’s goals, including women’s organizations, civil rights, advocacy, policy, and grassroots organizations, and other allies and stakeholders; regularly coordinate fundraising opportunities with them, build consensus on key issues, and tap their expertise and knowledge to inform the Foundation’s work
- Perform other duties as assigned
Skills and Qualifications:
- Individual must be a leader with strong people management, organizational, fundraising, communication, and consensus-building skills. Individual must possess business astuteness, be results oriented, be forward thinking and have the interpersonal skills necessary to establish and manage working relationships with staff. Successful candidates will be able to develop and maintain an organizational culture that positively welcomes diversity and change, promotes learning throughout, one who inspires collaboration, encourages the use of initiative, individual and team responsibility, open communication and positive commitment to GPFA’s mission and values.
- Graduate-level Degree in relevant field of study, or equivalent work experience
- At least five years senior management experience in fundraising, program, operations and/or human resources management
- A detail-oriented person, comfortable with varied organizational processes
- An individual who understands the subtleties of motivating, directing and working with diverse, strong, independent personalities and work styles
- An individual passionate about peace building and security, and/or girls and women's rights, equity and leadership
- An individual with an independent, self-sufficient, yet flexible work ethic
- A relationship builder with strong persuasion skills and a sense of humor
- Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills
- A proficiency in French preferred
