Summary:
The Senior Officer for Chapter Board Fundraising will serve as the national leader for an effort to assist 568 chapter boards (in 115 regions) across the country in becoming more successful fundraising bodies. He/she will provide leadership for the organization’s Annual Chapter Board Campaign and will support the National Philanthropic Board, which provides volunteer leadership for the campaign. He/she will collaborate closely with the Humanitarian Operations team at National Headquarters (NHQ) to produce and disseminate best practices (tools and materials) for chapter board fundraising. He/she will be a member of the Principal and Signature Gifts Team and will report to the Vice President for Principal and Signature Gifts. This position is located in Washington, D.C.
Responsibilities:
The Senior Officer will provide national, staff leadership for the Annual Chapter Board Campaign, which raised $9 million last fiscal year. He/she will develop detailed schedules for the campaign, develop and disseminate campaign materials, work with the 8 Division Fundraising Vice Presidents (DFVPs) and the seventeen members of the National Philanthropic Board (NPB) to lead the campaign, provide training to chapter staff members on conducting the campaign, and oversee tracking and reporting on campaign progress through SalesForce.com. Serving as the primary point of contact within the NHQ Development team for members of the NPB, he/she will establish regular communication with NPB members (both one-on-one and as a group), support the NPB chair, and plan in-person meetings of the NPB twice per year. He/she will produce and disseminate best practices (tools and materials) for the engagement of chapter board members in fundraising. He/she will develop quarterly fundraising communications to all chapter board members, including messages from national leadership. Secondary responsibilities include developing a training program for chapter board members for all stages of fundraising (prospecting, introductions, peer-to-peer asks, stewardship) and establishing a fundraising training program especially for board chairs. He/she will also develop a training program for staff members on engaging and maximizing fundraising volunteers. He/she will also determine how to leverage chapter board member connections that cross regional and divisional boundaries to support fundraising efforts (e.g., with national corporations). This position will work very closely with other groups within the Development Department, including the DFVPs, program staff on the NHQ Development team, and select regional chief development officers. In addition, this position will collaborate closely with the Volunteer Management Team, the Division Vice Presidents, and other groups within Humanitarian Operations at NHQ. Developing a plan for collaboration during every step of this work will be a key responsibility for this position.
Qualifications:
A Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent experience) in Marketing, Business, Sales, Organizational Development or a relevant field. A minimum of 7 years experience in fundraising. Experience working with non-profit boards to raise major gifts. Experience working within a national organization with a local chapter structure is desirable. Demonstrated ability to quickly gain the respect and support of various constituencies, including board members, regional chapter executives, and other national and chapter staff members. Excellent written and oral communication skills, including strong presentation, liaison and negotiation skills. Demonstrated motivation, leadership skills and ability to build consensus. Demonstrated tact and diplomacy in sensitive situations and respect for confidentiality. Demonstrated ability to work well independently and to handle deadlines, pressure and changing priorities with good judgment. Operational flexibility to meet sudden and unpredictable business needs, willingness to work outside standard established business hours, and some (10-20%) business travel are necessary.
