Los Angeles Fund - Senior Development Officer

LAUSD Superintendent John Deasy and philanthropist Megan Chernin formed the Los Angeles Fund for Public Education in 2011 with a simple goal: support ideas that can make a dramatic and direct impact on kids' lives and make sure those ideas have the support to be permanent. An independent 501c3 charitable organization, the LA Fund brings private, philanthropic dollars to support the needs of students, teachers and families in the Los Angeles Unified School District. They work collaboratively with District leadership, donors and school stakeholders to identify innovative "game-changing" programs for students across Los Angeles.

The Los Angeles Fund for Public Education is a philanthropic organization dedicated to driving positive change in the Los Angeles Unified School District. The LA Fund invests in innovative, results-oriented programs designed to ensure every student in the nation’s second largest school system has a chance to succeed.

ABOUT THE POSITION:

The Senior Development Officer will be a crucial member of the LA’s Fund’s leadership team, responsible for building the organization’s capacity to raise significant philanthropic support for the Los Angeles Unified School District. The Senior Development Officer will report to the Executive Director and develop a high-level development strategy, implement fundraising systems and processes, and manage a portfolio of donors and prospects.

Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Setting ambitious, yet attainable, revenue, donor quantity and retention goals by analyzing historical and market data
  • Regularly assessing team-wide progress towards goals, identifying what is driving and impeding progress, and developing solutions to address gaps; adjusting course as necessary
  • Building and maintaining strong development operations (i.e. donor tracking systems, data management, meeting prep and download systems, gift processing)
  • Designing and supporting tactical plans to achieve goals for different donor segments
  • Cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding donors through external meetings, events, and correspondence
  • Creating the long-range strategic development plan and vision to ensure that the LA Fund maximizes opportunities, and grows funding sustainably, including designing cultivation strategies and innovative initiatives
  • Coaching and developing the team, including the Board of Directors, to build strong donor relationships
  • Strategically employing the CEO, the ED and the Board in order to cultivate, solicit, and steward donors and prospects, and preparing/supporting the ED to execute on those actions
  • Overseeing the entire donor engagement process, from identification to cultivation, solicitation, and acknowledgement, reporting and tracking progress
  • Identifying and building relationships with foundations and corporate philanthropy programs
  • Managing the entire grant application process, writing letters of intent, grant applications, and grant reports

CANDIDATE REQUIREMENTS:

Successful candidates will be able to point to the following achievements, traits and sets of experiences in their backgrounds:

  • A minimum of 8 years of professional experience, with at least four years in development.
  • Bachelor's degree required; advanced degree preferred
  • Deep content knowledge of development operations, systems and best practices
  • Familiarity with or experience in fundraising for education, preferably public education
  • Excellent written and oral communications skills
  • Demonstrated capacity building skills with a clear track record of organizational leadership
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills
  • Analytical and systems-oriented approach to managing work
  • Comfortable and excited about managing in entrepreneurial setting
  • Ability to operate with purpose, urgency, and accuracy in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment
