Senior Director, Grant Development

POSITION OVERVIEW:
The Senior Director - Grant Development is responsible for the development and execution of a strategic approach and plan aimed at achieving measurable revenue targets, developing and enhancing partnerships with other funders, and achieving desired impact within the community. This position is responsible for developing and executing a strategy for raising an additional $25 Million in grant revenue by 2020. Major responsibilities include funder and prospect cultivation and stewardship, proposal and report review (with periodic writing required depending on volume of work load), board engagement, management of Senior Development Manager- Grant Development, manage outside vendors as necessary, developing and cultivating internal relationships across departments- including the Development Department and especially our Community Impact Department- to maximize efficiency and revenue growth, and becoming and staying knowledgeable about all United Way community programming.

KEY RESPONSIBILITY AREAS:
1. What: Create a long term strategic grant funding plan to meet grant specific revenue attainment goals which positions the organization to achieve community impact goals- Additional $25 Million by 2020 and takes advantage of all funding opportunities.
How: In collaboration with the Chief Development Officer, the Senior Vice President of Community Impact, other senior Community Impact staff and others across the organization, and in alignment with the business plan, develop a clear and actionable grant development plan.
How: Develop relationships beyond existing local and regional funders. Identify funding opportunities that align with our Community Impact goals through Natural Foundations, as well as state and federal funding agencies.

2. What: Execute grant funding plan to meet annual community impact targets.
How: Funder and Prospect Cultivation. Cultivate prospects and steward existing donors to retain all existing grant funders and acquire new grant funders in order to meet revenue goals. This will require frequent face to face meetings and phone calls. All meeting notes must be entered promptly into our CRM tool to ensure we are sharing information about donors and prospects in order to maximize revenue opportunities.

3. What: Proposal and Report Review (with periodic writing required)
How: Review all proposals and reports prepared by the Senior Development Manager- Grant Development and other staff across the organization to ensure consistency and quality of all proposals being submitted by the organization. The Senior Director will also be expected to write and prepare proposals and reports as needed but the primary focus will be proposal review.

4. What: Manage Senior Development Manager-Grant Development.
How: Manage Senior Development Manager- Grant Development to implement strategic plan to secure annual funding targets. Ensure that all proposal deadlines are met. Provide supervision, guidance and support to allow for professional growth for the Senior Development Manager- Grant Development.

5. What: Manage outside Vendors related to Grant Development.
How: The organization may contract with select vendors to provide specific expertise with regards to grant development- such as securing federal or national grants. This position will manage these relationships to ensure targets are met.

6. What: Develop and cultivate internal relationships across departments- including within different areas of Development to enhance corporate foundation opportunities and especially our Community Impact Department- to maximize efficiency and revenue growth.
How: Establish and cultivate relationships with key staff and teams from various departments to maximize efficiency and revenue growth.

7. What: Establish and maintain knowledge of United Way impact areas, goals, strategies and measures.
How: Study and master all written information regarding United Way’s impact areas, strategies, goals and measures. Keep informed of new developments in United Way’s approaches. Attend impact area team meetings as appropriate, coordinate efforts with research staff, content experts in Community Impact.

REQUIREMENTS:

• Bachelors degree in English, Journalism, Communications, or related field or demonstration of aptitude for writing and communicating
• Minimum five years direct experience in grants development for a health and human services agency with an emphasis on securing and retaining gifts of $100,000, and higher
• Minimum two years supervisory experience.
• Ability to work collaboratively across departments with diverse staff
• Ability to manage complex system of funding sources and content
• Ability to perform research and organize information
• Knowledge of mechanics of grant proposal submission
• Superior ability to write clearly, professionally, and persuasively and to effectively and efficiently review proposals and reports
• Proficiency with relevant technology (MSOffice – Word, Excel, PowerPoint; internet tools, etc.)
• Knowledge of standard written English, including correct grammar and spelling
• Knowledge of fields of early childhood, youth development, family financial stability programming (including basic needs, workforce development and affordable housing) preferred. Experience in other human services fields considered.
