American Civil Liberties Union - Talent Acquisition Specialist

The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), with now more than 500,000 members, was founded in 1920 and is a nationwide, nonprofit, nonpartisan organization dedicated to the principles of liberty and equality embodied in the U.S. Constitution. The Human Resources Department of the ACLU’s National Office in New York City is seeking a full-time Talent Acquisition Specialist.

OVERVIEW

The Human Resources Department works to support the goals of the ACLU by providing services which promote an inclusive work environment that is characterized by fair treatment of staff, open communication, trust and mutual respect. The Talent Acquisition Specialist will function as a key member of the HR department, and will work in collaboration with the staffing management team and hiring managers and employ best practices to identify and attract qualified candidates to the ACLU.

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Partner with hiring managers to identify core competencies and objectives of open positions, prepare job analyses and draft job postings and descriptions.
  • Educate managers on best practices, laws, policies and procedures related to candidate selection.
  • Collaborate with staffing management team and hiring managers to develop sourcing strategies.
  • Identify and utilize a variety of recruitment sources including job boards, websites, college placement offices, social media, professional membership organizations and networking opportunities as sources to generate diverse pools of qualified applicants.
  • Conduct ongoing cost/benefit analyses of sourcing strategies and inform staffing management of the results; Make recommendations for changes based on results.
  • Adopt a customer service approach in providing guidance and continuous communication to hiring managers and staffing management team throughout the recruitment process.
  • Review resumes, and conduct telephone and in-person screening of applicants.
  • Confer with staffing management team on all compensation-related issues.
  • Refer and recommend qualified candidates to hiring manager.
  • Verify educational and professional certifications, conduct reference checks, extend offers of employment, prepare offer and declination letters.
  • Handle requests for temporary workers, interns, volunteers, etc., in collaboration with the HR Associate.
  • Work in conjunction with Sr. HR Generalist to develop an employee onboarding program, and formal structured internship and volunteer programs.
  • Manage tracking system to ensure that talent acquisition processes are documented and handled in a timely manner.
  • Collaborate with other HR team members on special projects as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources Management, Business Management or other relevant degree and a minimum of five years of full-cycle talent acquisition experience. PHR certification preferred.
  • Contacts in the employment of people with disabilities awareness community is a plus.
  • Experience with best practices methods in talent acquisition.
  • Must demonstrate a professional and approachable demeanor.
  • Superb communication, customer service and interpersonal skills, with the ability to demonstrate flexibility and grace under pressure in interactions with all staff and external agencies/contacts.
  • Strong internet search and applicant sourcing techniques.
  • Experience working on diversity and inclusion programs.
  • Proven ability and skill in interviewing techniques.
  • Strong knowledge of employment law required with special emphasis on candidate selection.
  • Ability to identify and communicate bottlenecks in the talent acquisition process and to recommend solutions to expedite the process.
  • Must be able to work independently as well as part of a team.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office including Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint; HRIS database experience and experience with applicant tracking systems required.
  • Excellent organizational skills; ability to manage multiple projects; superior attention to detail with strong follow-through. Creative thinker with the ability to see projects through to completion and meet tight deadlines in a fast paced environment.

The ACLU offers a generous and comprehensive compensation and benefits package, commensurate with experience and within parameters of the ACLU compensation scale.
