DESCRIPTION:
Reporting to the Database and Web Initiatives Manager, the Director for Web Initiatives manages a team of two web application programmers focused on ASP.NET, C#, Java Script and some Oracle backend development, and one front-end developer working with HTML/CSS and Drupal. The team maintains responsibility for building and supporting internal and public-facing web sites and applications, including Athena, Columbia's database of record for alumni and gift data. User community includes colleagues throughout the Office of Alumni and Development, other University staff involved in fund raising and alumni relations, and roughly 300,000 living alumni of Columbia's undergraduate, graduate and professional programs. The Director is responsible for providing coding expertise, as well as a management structure based on agile methodologies, such as Scrum or XP.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
The Director for Web Initiatives is an active participant in application development, serves as the senior developer on the team while providing overall direction on programming techniques and application architecture; manages servers and related infrastructure; coordinates day to day tasks and longer term priorities; apprises the management team of progress via regular status meetings; maintains responsibility for direct management of the programming team, including annual reviews of staff performance and working with team members to establish individual goals for each fiscal year; assists with prioritization of work and ensures appropriate level of required support is sustained to effectively troubleshoot and resolve issues in a timely manner; serves as a business analyst consistently meeting with end users to identify new project opportunities, defines requirements and translates them into actionable tasks for the programming team; performs other duties and special projec ts as assigned.
Bachelor's degree required; a minimum of five years related technical system experience, including at least one year of prior management experience required.
Advanced degree or other professional certification preferred; experience developing service-oriented APIs and client applications highly desirable. Familiarity with CMS platforms (Drupal or similar application) preferred. Prior experience in higher education preferred.
