Samaritan House - Executive Director
Samaritan House, founded in 1984, is a dynamic, growing non-profit organization that provides housing and programs for victims of domestic violence and homeless families. The program is the largest domestic violence shelter in Virginia. Samaritan House is committed to fostering personal safety, self-sufficiency and personal growth in adults and their children through freedom from domestic abuse and homelessness.
While Samaritan House’s emergency shelters and transitional housing units are located in Virginia Beach, it houses over 100 people from all parts of South Hampton Roads each night. Annually we answer about 8,000 crisis line calls. Samaritan House provides a wide range of programs to its clients, including 24/7 crisis hotline, emergency and transitional shelters, case management during and after shelter, counseling and support groups, children’s advocacy and counseling, referrals for legal services and victim advocacy, employment readiness, community-based education/prevention and, life-skills training.
Samaritan House continues to develop and implement innovative programs including a recent Department of Justice Office OVW grant for housing for victims of domestic violence called Transition in Place in concert with the City of Virginia Beach. It is an organization with a focused mission and outstanding community support.
Samaritan House is seeking a dynamic leader to continue the growth and development of its programs for the community. The organization is financially stable with an annual operating budget of approximately $2.4 million with a diversity of funding including 43% from various types of community support, 41% from grants, 11% from rental income, and 4% from United Way. There is a staff of approximately 34 full and part time positions and the use of about 9,000 hours of volunteer time per year.
The Executive Director manages the general affairs and operations of Samaritan House including development, program administration, financial management, operations, property management, and outreach and education. The Executive Director is responsible to the Board of Directors.
Provides positive leadership that motivates and encourages the staff and the Board to achieve the goals of the organization.
Working closing with the Director of Development and Board of Directors, the Executive Director will implement a development plan that supports the annual budget and Strategic Plan. Must be competent at meeting with donors in the Major Gift and Endowment Campaign solicitations.
Working closely with others on the Management Team and the Board of Directors, the Executive Director develops and implements the short- and long-range actions and strategies as outlined in the Strategic Plan. This requires creative approaches to developing programs and seeking solutions for community needs.
Accountable for meeting fiscal year budgeted income and expenses as recommended by the Executive Director and approved by the Board of Directors. The financial structure is complex with a diversity of funding sources. Provides oversight to all operational and property management for 16 facilities. Leads human resources to ensure a well trained, professional staff.
Working with the Program Director, continually evaluates the effectiveness of current programs, makes improvements as necessary, and identifies and develops new programs to meet client and community needs. Seeks resources to support desired programs.
MARKETING AND PUBLIC RELATIONS
The Executive Director is responsible for representing the organization throughout the community to ensure continued broad based support and a positive public image in a highly competitive non-profit sector environment.
We seek an entrepreneurial, hands-on, experienced executive who brings a passion for the mission of the Samaritan House and who will thrive in a human service oriented environment. This leader will have highly developed interpersonal skills and be diplomatic, collaborative, and flexible. The candidate must have outstanding financial and operational management, be detail-oriented, demonstrate creative thinking, and be good at taking initiative.
This is a full-time position with benefits. Salary based on experience and qualifications.
