THE ORGANIZATION
Founded in 1995, PENCIL is a New York City-based education non-profit that inspires innovative solutions to the challenges facing public education by providing results-driven opportunities for the private sector to actively participate in transforming public schools.
Our programs share a common premise: by bringing together the best ideas, talent and
resources across sectors, we can create real change in our schools. The organization’s core program—the PENCIL Partnership Program—helps schools overcome some of the challenges they face by building and supporting customized relationships between private sector leaders and principals. The program provides a flexible yet structured way for members of the business community to leverage their unique expertise and resources to help meet school needs.
Partners collaborate in one or more of three impact areas: developing school leadership, building school capacity, and/or enhancing student learning. PENCIL supports these collaborations throughout the year with one-on-one technical assistance from a designated Partnership Coordinator, a library of materials outlining best practices, and a series of workshops and training events. PENCIL also runs one of the city’s largest high school summer internship programs, the PENCIL Fellows.
