Managing Director, Development

Teach for America

Teach For America - Managing Director, Development The Managing Director of Development (MDD) will help lead our campaign to raise over $30 million in operating revenue over the next 4 years. The MDD reports directly to and works closely with the Executive Director on setting and executing high level development strategy, managing and developing a team of talented development professionals, and managing a portfolio of donors and prospects.

Responsibilities

  • Creating the long range regional development vision and annual strategic and operating plans to ensure that the D.C. Region maximizes opportunities, meets its goals, and significantly grows funding while building long-term sustainability.

Specifically:

  • Setting ambitious yet feasible revenue, donor quantity and retention benchmarks to achieve both immediate (current FY) and long-term (next 3-5 years) development goals
  • Developing and implementing strategies and tactical plans to achieve goals for different donor segments
  • Regularly assessing team-wide progress to goals, identifying what is driving and impeding progress, developing solutions to address gaps, and adjusting course as necessary
  • Managing a development team of five staff members to ensure progress toward our goals and develop them as professionals.

Specifically coaching and developing the team to:

  • Build and execute strong strategic plans for their donor portfolio thereby building strong donor relationships, increasing donor renewal and upgrade rates, and expanding the donor base
  • Prioritize the right actions for the ED to take in order to cultivate, solicit, and steward donors and prospects and prepares/supports ED to execute
  • Conduct excellent donor interactions and communications (i.e., events, meetings, newsletters, grants)
  • Develop and maintain strong operations (i.e., donor tracking systems, data management, meeting prep and download systems, gift processing)
  • Maximize individual performance and contribution, through ongoing direct feedback and tracking performance against clearly defined individual performance goals.
  • Cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding a portfolio of donors through meetings, events, and correspondence

D.C. Region Team Overview
Founded in 1992, Teach For America - D.C. Region has nearly 375 corps members reaching more than 19,000 students in two area districts. In addition, almost 1,400 alumni, including some of the top officials in District of Columbia Public Schools and two local elected officials, are working from all sectors to close the achievement gap in the area. The region is supported by a funding base of $8.3 million, and regional staff members work to train and support corps members, strengthen relationships with local schools and districts, foster the leadership of local alumni, and grow the regional funding base to ensure that Teach For America - D.C. Region will have an even greater impact. By 2015, the region aims to support a corps of 350 teachers and an alumni base of 3,000.

Candidate Profile and Experience Prerequisites Profile

  • Is a long-range critical thinker who enjoys spending significant time problem solving and developing opportunities in order to achieve the most meaningful outcomes
  • Is highly organized and motivated to manage self and others around complex projects and work streams
  • Has demonstrated the ability to both influence and manage superiors, peers, and direct reports to achieve ambitious, measurable results
  • Leverages a keen understanding of the beliefs, contexts and motivations of others to influence key stakeholders towards meaningful outcomes
  • Is a strong verbal and written communicator; can speak compellingly about our organization, mission and goals and has a mature presence
  • Is passionate about our mission, believes deeply in the importance of inspiring/investing external people in our mission/work, and has high expectations for how Teach For America is viewed by external constituents
  • Demonstrated pattern of continuously working to develop and better self, teams and organization

Education and Experience

Bachelor's degree required
5 to 7 years of work experience preferred

Technical Skills
Must be proficient in MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint
