Vera Institute of Justice - Research Assistant (Short-Term)
Vera’s Prosecution and Racial Justice Program (PRJ) enhances prosecutorial accountability and performance through partnerships with prosecutors’ offices nationwide. PRJ works collaboratively with its partners to analyze data about the exercise and impacts of prosecutorial discretion; assists in developing routine policies and practices that promote fairness, efficiency and professionalism in prosecution; and provides technical assistance to help prosecutors implement those measures. By collaborating with prosecutors, analyzing data, and devising solutions, PRJ works alongside prosecutors to improve their performance and related criminal justice outcomes.
Responsibilities
The research assistant will work on a range of tasks but will mainly focus on data collection from criminal case files and data entry into Excel. She or he will also assist senior researchers with research reports and conference presentation materials. The position will require travel within New York City. The research assistant will be required to complete human subject training prior to accessing any data.
Qualifications

Undergraduate and graduate students, or recent graduates, majoring in the social sciences or law are encouraged to apply.

Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, communication skills, and ability to work as part of a team are essential.

Experience with Microsoft Office programs, especially Excel, is required.

Familiarity with statistical software packages (SPSS and/or STATA) is preferred.
Compensation
$20 per hour.
Schedule
The planned start date for this position is August 01, 2012 at 14 hours per week. The position is planned to increase to 35 hours per week on September 01, 2012. The position is planned to end November 30, 2012.
