Director of Development

Invisible Children
San Diego, California

Invisible Children - Director of Devleopment

Invisible Children (“IC”) is seeking a new leader to build and lead our Development Department. For the past nine years, IC has been focused on achieving a permanent end to LRA violence in Central Africa through a comprehensive four-part model. We have built a constituency of millions of engaged supporters and donors (email list of 3.2 million subscribers; largest charity on Facebook with 3 million followers).

Our development model is truly unique, as the majority of our funding (annual average: $10-15M) comes from small donations from young people in the U.S. and around the world. This year, following the viral success of KONY 2012 and nearly a decade of grassroots organizing, we are looking to professionalize our Development Department, steward our constituency to become long-term financial supporters, and cultivate top donor relationships.

Job Summary:

The Director of Development will join the IC management team at the highest level, working directly with our COO, CEO, and Board of Directors to set a development strategy and drive revenue generation. Our ideal candidate has a strong background in development and major gifts and is ready to embrace this unique opportunity to build and lead a professional development operation on top of the world’s largest youth movement.

Qualifications:

  • Leadership: Experience in planning, leading, managing and reporting on development projects; experience motivating and leading a successful team
  • Entrepreneurial Spirit: Takes initiative, actively seeks out new opportunities and forges new donor relationships
  • Strategy: Ability to identify areas of biggest potential impact, to set a strategy around the unique composition of the organization, and to show accountability for implementation
  • Fundraising: Proven success in development for a nonprofit; experience in fundraising through multiple donor channels
  • Communication: Skilled in creating powerful, compelling communications for fundraising
  • Influencing: Ability to sell the vision of Invisible Children to key contacts
  • Relationship-Building: Skilled at establishing and cultivating strong relationships externally and with colleagues across different levels of the organization
  • Creativity: Ability to connect with idealistic and creative staff, supporters, and donors in a highly innovative environment
  • International Experience: Preferably has experience with an international donor base
  • Collaboration: Effective at working with others to reach common goals and objectives; experience coaching other Executive staff and Board members to solicit funding
Come work with us if:
  • You thrive in an entrepreneurial environment
  • You are driven by excellence and impact
  • You have at least 8 years experience in development/ fundraising at a nonprofit, and are excited by the challenge of adapting a traditional model to an untraditional one
  • Adaptability and taking initiative are some of your key strengths
  • You don’t hate the idea of living in beautiful San Diego
