Set amidst the stunning architectural and natural landscapes of Carmel, California, the Carmel Bach Festival is a world class, 15-day celebration of music and ideas inspired by the historical and ongoing influence of Johann Sebastian Bach in the world. A rich summer schedule features full orchestral and choral works, individual vocal and chamber ensemble concerts, recitals, master classes, lectures and informal talks, in addition to interactive social and family events. Now in its 75th anniversary season, the Carmel Bach Festival has a charismatic new music director, a vibrant twenty-five member board and a dynamic staff, and offers a stimulating work environment. The Festival’s budget size is approximately $2 million.
The Position
A member of the Festival staff team, the Development Manager will plan, manage, and implement a comprehensive development program that builds and expands philanthropic and business support for the Festival’s work. Working together with the Executive Director and the Board of Directors, the Development Manager will identify, prioritize, cultivate, solicit and acknowledge donors and prospects. Key functions include: Manage annual fundraising campaigns including developing campaign strategy, creating language for appeals, and managing execution; Nurture donor relations, including research, communications, follow-up activities, and acknowledgments; Oversee, plan and assist in implementing donor recognition events and planned giving event in collaboration with the Festival events team; Maintain and grow the Festival’s corporate and foundation grant funding, involving research, grant writing, and proposal follow-up; Build and administer the corporate/business sponsorship program involving coordination with marketing and other staff and board, with support of administrative assistant; Manage donor data and maintain development database (Raiser’s Edge software) with the support of administrative assistant; Work with the Board of Directors and Executive Director in building the planned giving program and supporting endowment campaign efforts; Serve as staff liaison to development committee of the board.
Qualifications
The ideal candidate will have: a minimum of 3-5 years of experience in the non-profit development field with proven success in leading fundraising campaigns and building philanthropic support. Excellent relationship-building skills and experience working with a Board, a staff team, donors, and volunteers is a must. The successful candidate will also have the natural propensity for analytical and strategic thinking as the Carmel Bach Festival moves toward its new vision under the artistic leadership of Maestro Paul Goodwin.
It is essential that the candidate be forward-thinking, a passionate team player, extremely well organized, detail oriented and a self-starter. Must be able to demonstrate strong written and verbal communication skills, an aptitude for navigating databases (knowledge of Raiser’s Edge a plus), and the ability to manage multiple tasks – in a fast-paced small office environment – simultaneously.
Candidates with development experience in the non-profit performing arts sector will be considered above other applicants.
Compensation
Salary commensurate with experience, plus health, dental, retirement, vacation, personal time, complimentary tickets, and opportunity for growth.
