Advocacy Writer

Corporate Accountability International
Boston, Massachusetts

Corporate Accountability International - Advocacy Writer

For 35 years, Corporate Accountability International has successfully challenged corporations like Nestlé, General Electric, and Philip Morris to halt abusive practices that threaten human rights, public health, the environment and our democracy. The organization is expanding—and leading campaigns challenging some of the world’s most powerful industries from food and agriculture to water and Big Tobacco. Think Outside the Bottle exposes the truth behind bottled water marketing and defends the human right to water in the face of increasing corporate control. Value [the] Meal challenges the fast food industry to stop driving an epidemic of diet-related disease, and our campaign to Challenge Big Tobacco protects the first-ever corporate accountability treaty from tobacco industry interference.

The Advocacy Writer will join a strong and committed team to help build the organization’s capacity to challenge corporate power. The Advocacy Writer will work closely with the Chief of Staff to drive the organization’s foundation work. In addition, the Writer will also contribute to the overall work of the communications team. We are looking for a strong writer with a fundraising background who would thrive in an enthusiastic and campaign-oriented atmosphere.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Draft, edit, research and proofread foundation communications, including letters of interest, proposals, and reports.
  • Draft, edit and proofread additional materials as needed, including reports, campaign, membership and media outreach pieces.
  • Analyze and synthesize media, campaign, and organizational developments for program officers.
  • Coordinate the review and approval of communications by senior staff.
  • Write and edit content for the organization’s website.
  • Maintain comprehensive, accurate and up-to-date files, records and systems.
  • Participate in organization-wide planning, fundraising and campaign activities.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated commitment to social justice and progressive social change.
  • At least four years of writing experience in a non-profit setting, including a proven track record in development writing.
  • A portfolio demonstrating the ability to write quickly, concisely, and in a manner compelling to philanthropic partners.
  • Enthusiasm for the organization’s mission and campaigns, as well as a passion for building the organization.
  • Ability to juggle multiple tasks and consistently meet deadlines.
  • Highly motivated and tenacious, with great attention to detail.
  • Grassroots organizing experience a major plus.
  • Computer skills: proficiency with Excel, Microsoft Office a must; experience with design software like Adobe Photoshop, CRM’s like Salsa, and CMS’s like Drupal a bonus.
