Earthjustice is at the forefront of a national fight to establish the first ever federal regulations for coal ash disposal. Heavy lobbying from the power and coal industries has not only delayed these long overdue protections, it has also created legislative attempts to disable the EPA’s efforts to move forward with their protective standards. Communities across the country are at risk, and hundreds of local groups are fighting to clean up their drinking water supplies and protect themselves against the toxic coal ash menace.
Earthjustice is seeking an experienced organizer with strong credentials and experience working with small, local community groups to act as a Community Partnerships Manager in order to harness the energy present in many local battles and use it most effectively to hold the EPA and Congress to account. We are seeking someone who has established relationships with local community, Native, environmental justice, health and faith-based groups. The most compelling argument for strong, federally enforceable safeguards against coal ash comes from the stories of local communities forced to bear this burden. The Community Partnerships Manager will play a significant role in identifying these communities, coordinating our national efforts with their local efforts, and bringing their stories to a national stage.
This position is based in Washington, D.C. and reports directly to the Communications Campaign Director.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Help achieve Earthjustice’s goal of federally enforceable coal ash regulations by building on current relationships with local community, native, faith-based, and health groups directly affected by coal ash disposal; and develop new relationships within these, other groups, and local communities.
- Identify ways to partner with others to elevate their voices along with Earthjustice’s voice.
- Coordinate action and outreach among partner groups and with local communities.
- Lead the development of a multi-year plan which sustains outreach to groups and builds the necessary momentum to project a strong voice in the debate.
Outbound Communications & Internal Coordination
- In collaboration with the Campaign Director, identify opportunities for outreach including local earned and limited paid media.
- Develop communications materials that can be used by Earthjustice and other groups in their outreach, e.g. write web postings, blogs, fact sheets, press releases and other communications materials related to local or federal coal ash issues.
- Work closely with a multimedia producer to identify potential community groups to partner with in the development of online videos and multimedia content; recognize the value of storytelling in crafting a compelling narrative about the need for strong coal ash protections.
- Represent Earthjustice at conferences, community meetings, state and local hearings and other relative events as needed.
- Work closely with other Communications staff in developing multi-year coalition building plans and outreach.
- Work closely with policy staff to identify groups and individuals to attend educational meetings with and participate in outreach to Congressional representatives.
- Report on activities to Campaign Director.
This is a full-time, project position funded for three years with the possibility of an extension.
- Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, Environmental Science, or Political Science preferred; advanced degree a plus.
- 7-10 years of progressively responsible experience in outreach and organizing.
- Previous local and regional earned media experience.
- Capacity to manage multiple projects and tight deadlines
- Ability to work well with others and get along with many personalities.
- Demonstrated ability to develop campaign plans, manage time, and adapt to unforeseen circumstances.
- Experience speaking to media.
- Grassroots organizing a plus.
- This position will require extensive travel across the country.
