Director, Major Gifts

The Asia Foundation (TAF) seeks a Director of Major Gifts to work in its San Francisco, CA office. The Director will be primarily responsible for the Foundation’s overall engagement with individual major gift donors and prospects, bearing primary responsibility for the day-to-day management of these critical Foundation relationships. The incumbent will report to, and work closely with, the VP for Resource Development and the Office of the President in the following areas: (1) assist with the development of individualized strategies for the cultivation and stewardship of potential or existing major gift donors, including direct support of solicitation, cultivation and stewardship activities of the President and the Vice President of Resource Development, and, as appropriate, will directly solicit and engage potential and existing donors (55% of time); (2) develop, coordinate and support a TAF advisory council and its trustee chairs, refining terms of service, identifying and recruiting new members, conceptualizing and coordinating annual events for such council (35% of time); and (3) work closely with the VP and Assistant Director for Resource Development, the Director of Corporate and Foundation Relations and others to manage and lead the Foundation’s private fundraising team (10% of time).

Requirements

Experience

At least seven to ten years of related work experience in the private fundraising and development field, with a significant focus on major donors and knowledge of general approaches to fundraising from private sources and a proven record of securing major contributions from individuals, family foundations, and corporate leaders. Work experience with political campaigns or legislative constituency offices, business development, financial services, or philanthropic consulting services are considered pluses, as is time spent developing and managing projects. Strong background working with, and communicating to, external audiences and diverse groups, as a representative of an organization. Experience working with individual donors and professional advisors strongly recommended. Experience working in Asia or on Asia-related issues is preferred.

Education

A Bachelor’s degree in English, Communications, International Relations or a related field; however a Master’s degree in a relevant is field preferred. We will consider five to ten years of work experience as the equivalent of the education requirement. A CFRE credential is also desirable but not required.

Strong commitment to philanthropy and to the international mission of The Asia Foundation. Strong analytic, communication, writing, problem-solving, and program development and management skills essential. Ability to learn and gain working knowledge of the hundreds of projects developed and run by The Asia Foundation. Demonstrated capacity to exercise independent initiative and judgment essential. Ability to interact in a sophisticated manner with existing and potential advisory board members and donors, who are all prominent in their own field of expertise. Competence in office procedures and PC applications (i.e. word processing, spreadsheets, and databases). Strong organizational abilities required. Familiarity with fundraising software such as Raiser’s Edge preferred. Knowledge and experience in Asia and Asian Pacific issues preferred.
