Advancement Project - Director of Development and Communications

Advancement Project is a next generation, multi-racial civil rights organization. Advancement Project’s California office engineers large-scale systems change to remedy inequality expand opportunity and open paths to upward mobility. Our goal is that members of all communities have the safety, opportunity and health they need to thrive. Our California offices’ primary programs include: Educational Equity - Ensures school facilities for all and expands educational opportunities for low-income children from birth through high school graduation; Equity in Public Funds - Reveals significant discrepancies between the allocation of public funds and the needs of low-income communities and communities of color; Healthy City - Provides an information + action resource that unites community voices, rigorous research and innovative technologies to solve the root causes of social inequity by transforming how people access and use information about their communities; and Urban Peace - Reduces community violence so that poor nei ghborhoods are safe enough for children to learn, families to thrive and communities to prosper.

Responsibilities:

The Director of Development & Communications is responsible for developing the strategy for both resource development and communications, and ensuring its implementation, for Advancement Project’s California office. Some specific duties include:

  • Set strategic goals and focus for development and communication activities in collaboration with program directors and Managing Co-Director
  • Develop a strong understanding of each program area and their evolving work and resource needs
  • Oversee institutional fundraising efforts in partnership with program directors, including supervising staff, and establishing and nurturing relationships with funders
  • Oversee individual donor fundraising efforts and supervise staff
  • Oversee strategic communications efforts, including executing communications plan, supervising communications staff and coordinating with program areas to develop specific products. Significant research, writing, copyediting and vendor management is also required.
  • Manage the budget and staffing priorities for the Department
  • Sit on the organizational Management Team, representing the concerns and needs of fund development and communications
  • Coordinate with Advancement Project’s National Office fund development and communication activities

Qualifications:

Successful candidates for the Director of Development & Communications must represent Advancement Project professionally while also conveying passionate commitment to the goals of increasing equity and enhancing civil rights. The successful candidate will be that person most likely to ensure that fund development is effective while also working well with all levels of staff. Other qualifications include:

  • Demonstrated successful experience of seven years or more with all forms of fund development, including grant writing, major gifts, events, and planning for an organization of comparable budget size
  • Prior experience as a Development Director with a track record of planning, managing and executing for growth is desirable
  • Knowledge of the philanthropic landscape, including relationships with funders and donors
  • Knowledge of and prior experience in fund development and/or communications with a policy-centered organization and/or an organization focused on social or racial justice issues
  • Demonstrated prior successful experience with strategic communications, including media relations, publications development, online/social media strategies, or branding and messaging
  • Superior writing skills, particularly for a general audience
  • Ability to serve as a team player within multiple teams
  • Ability to balance day to day demands with big-picture vision and strategy
  • Demonstrated commitment to equity and inclination to work with a staff that is focused on civil rights, equity and social justice

Salary:

Highly competitive compensation depending on experience. Includes full health, dental and vision benefits
