Advancement Project - Immigrant Justice Director/Senior Attorney

Advancement Project seeks a seasoned attorney and community advocate, an experienced and innovative project manager, and a creative problem solver in its Washington D.C. office to serve as Director and Senior Attorney in our Immigrant Justice Project.

Advancement Project is a next generation, multi-racial civil rights organization. We tackle inequity with innovative strategies and strong community alliances. With a national office in Washington, DC and two offices in California, we combine law, communications, policy, and technology to create workable solutions and achieve systemic change. We aim to inspire and strengthen movements that expand opportunity for all. The Senior Attorney will direct Advancement Project’s Immigrant Justice Project, which partners with grassroots organizations across the country to protect the rights of immigrants including by defending against the heightened criminalization of immigrants, those perceived to be immigrants, and communities of color. The strategies and tactics of the Immigrant Justice Project are carried out within the broader goal of racial justice. The Senior Attorney will be expected to supervise staff, build relationships and work closely with partner grassroots organizations, and use a variety of legal, policy, communications, and coalition-building strategies to assist our community partners in advancing and defending immigrant rights.


The Program Director will:

  • Lead, build, and motivate an energetic, innovative team;
  • Work in collaboration with management team to create project goals and workplans that create systemic change and deliver impact;
  • Work with the Communications Department to execute communications strategies;
  • Foster team and individual growth and promote team’s work;
  • Offer a strategic vision and creative solutions for protecting the rights of immigrants;
  • Review the team’s written work products to ensure the consistent production of high quality work products and advocacy;
  • Litigate to challenge state laws, practices, or procedures;
  • Cultivate and manage strategic multiracial, multicultural relationships, coalitions, and partnerships to build power in communities of color;
  • Assist the Development Department with budgets, fundraising, and reporting;
  • Assist Co-Directors and other Project Directors in managing investigations and litigation in other projects, as needed; and
  • Manage the Project’s budget effectively and adjust expenditures as necessary.

Required qualifications:

  • Seven to ten years post JD experience;
  • State bar membership (must be member of or able to waive into the DC Bar);
  • Experience in litigating and conducting policy and legislative advocacy in the area of immigrant justice;
  • Demonstrated commitment to racial justice;
  • Excellent written, verbal, analytical, interpersonal, and organizational skills;
  • Experience working with grassroots organizations;
  • Willingness to travel; and
  • Willingness to work in other program areas, as nee
ded.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Organizing or campaign experience; and
  • Fluency in Spanish.


Salary is based on experience; benefits included.
