LOCATION: Garrison, NY - approx 1 hour north of NYC (modified work schedule possible)
The Garrison Institute (the “Institute”) was established in 2003 as a non-profit, non-sectarian organization exploring the intersection of contemplation and engaged action in the world. Since its founding, the Institute has made the case for the relevance of contemplative-based approaches to social and environmental change, and demonstrative that they can be applied in practical, evidence-based ways while meeting scientific rigor and providing measurable, pragmatic results. The Institute’s program initiatives currently include Contemplative Teaching and Learning; Climate, Mind and Behavior; and Transforming Trauma. Through its retreats, more than 35,000 individuals have learned contemplative-based methods for building personal resiliency and transforming their approach to work in the world. The Institute has a team of over 30 permanent staff with an annual operating budget of approximately $4 million. The Institute is housed in a beautifully renov ated former monastery on 90 acres overlooking the Hudson River an hour north of New York City.
This is an exciting opportunity for a development and marketing/communications leader with expert people and process management skills to join a growing organization. As the Deputy Executive Director of Development & External Relations you will create and implement a comprehensive fundraising and marketing/communications strategy that will increase the Institute’s revenue streams and donor support, build greater public awareness of the Institute’s mission and strengthen program impact though innovative approaches to social networking and knowledge dissemination. Reporting to the Executive Director, you will be a member of the senior management team and work closely with the Institute’s Board of Trustees to realize agreed-upon development goals and objectives. With the support of a full-time Development Manager as well as a full-time Communications Manager (and an additional staff member under each Manager) you will ensure that the work of each department is well-coordinated within the Institute’s overall management and administrative structures. While this is a generalist role, your expertise building and ma naging comprehensive individual giving programs (major gift campaigns, annual appeals, etc.) across a broad range of donors is highly preferred.
The position requires a Master’s Degree (advanced degree a plus) and 10+ years of development and external relations experience. This experience should be coupled with demonstrated supervisory experience, team building, and organizational leadership success. Ability to foster collaborative management based on open, transparent, and inclusive decision-making is strongly desired. Comfort in proactively building relationships with major donors as well as implementing major gift campaigns, annual appeals, and other individual giving strategies are a must.
