The New York Academy of Sciences is an independent, not-for-profit organization committed to advancing science, technology, and society worldwide since 1817. The Academy uses these networks to catalyze path-breaking initiatives for scientific, social and economic benefit. Its core mission is to advance scientific knowledge, positively impact the major global challenges of society with science-based solutions, and increase the number of scientifically informed individuals in society at large. It achieves this through innovative programs in life sciences – including expanding initiatives in Nutrition and Alzheimer’s disease; physical sciences – including programs in energy and environmental science; and STEM education.

The Academy facilitates communications among scientists, physicians, students, educators, executives, policy makers, government officials and journalists from around the globe through its interdisciplinary conferences, meetings and diverse electronic and print publications. The Academy employs 75 professional and support staff, and has an annual operating budget of $15+ million.

JOB TITLE: Director, Corporate Relations

DEPARTMENT: Development

REPORTS TO: Vice President & Chief Development Officer

SUMMARY:

As a 501(c) (3) charity organization, the Academy seeks philanthropic support to carry out its mission and ensure that the institution has the resources, talent, and ability to deliver its innovative programs. The Academy is seeking a Director, Corporate Relations to complement a team of Development professionals in its work to secure partnerships and financial support to drive its initiatives. The Academy receives strong support from industry partners and, with the leadership of a driven and entrepreneurial Director, Corporate Relations, has ample opportunity to expand its corporate funding portfolio, specifically in support of innovative and growing programs in STEM Education, Translational Science, and Physical Sciences and Engineering.

Working with the current Director, Corporate Relations and the full Development team, the Director, Corporate Relations will fill a new position with primary responsibility for managing and advancing all aspects of a portfolio of corporate accounts to meet revenue goals in support of a suite of programs. S/he will build and maintain strong partnerships and relationships, both internally and across multiple industries including pharmaceutical/biotech, food/beverage, energy, finance, law, real estate, chemicals, manufacturing, and others. S/he will be responsible for developing and implementing industry fundraising strategy and managing efforts of Development staff as needed to achieve success and meet revenue goals, including identifying prospects and developing, cultivating, and stewarding partnerships, as well as renewing support from existing partners.

The Academy seeks an entrepreneurial and collaborative leader and partner who will innovate and expand existing approaches to strengthen the engagement of corporate partners. The Director, Corporate Relations will be a key member of a dedicated, fast-paced Development team and will collaborate within the department and across the organization to develop and implement strategies to drive corporate support. It’s critical that s/he be able to contribute, collaborate and deliver at a consistently high-level.

PRIMARY ACCOUNTABILITIES:

Revenue Responsibility: Maximize the corporate support of current supporters. Identify and cultivate prospect leads in industry (and foundations, as appropriate) to support Academy programs, with the goal of securing multiple new 5-6+-figure contributions. Convert leads into active supporters to meet annual revenue goals of $1.5 million+. Provide stewardship to existing corporate partners and secure ongoing renewed support.

Strategic Planning: Responsible for developing and implementing strategic priorities and budgets for industry support in collaboration with Chief Development Officer and other senior members of the Development team.

Prospect Research and Proposal Management: Develop and coordinate and/or assign tasks regarding overall prospect research and proposal development including: tracking of cultivation, stewardship, and solicitation activity for corporate (and foundation, as appropriate) prospects, partners, and supporters. Write and submit proposals directly or via staff. Participate in weekly Development meetings to share updates of activities. Collaborate with Development staff, sharing best practices, current challenges, and opportunities and to assist in framing overall development strategy.

Reporting and Analysis: Develop and coordinate reports as required to industry partners. Utilize donor database (The Raiser’s Edge) for reporting/analysis that measure progress against department goals.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in business, marketing, science, engineering, or equivalent. Master’s Degree preferred.
  • Strong background or demonstrated interest in science.
  • Five or more years of demonstrated experience in development or sales with knowledge of corporate giving, including CSR programs, corporate foundations, and corporate outreach programs.
  • Relevant experience in fields including management, fundraising, marketing, strategic planning and business development; preferably in science & technology-based sectors.
  • Demonstrated ability to meet and exceed revenue projections, by securing 5+-figure contributions.
  • Demonstrated results in developing strategic partnerships.
  • Advanced skills in project management and budget.
  • Superior writing, oral communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficiency in word processing, spreadsheets, databases, and presentation software.
  • Ability to work within a team framework and manage teams and projects.
  • Ability to develop strong presence in the community through effective networking, planning, and execution of fundraising strategies.
  • Ability to think creatively and to innovate.
  • Excellent flexibility and adaptability skills with a strong work ethic and entrepreneurial spirit to accommodate large responsibility and shifting priorities.
