Hunt Alternatives Fund - Managing Director, Demand Abolition

Demand Abolition supports the movement to end the demand for illegal commercial sex in the US. Our goal is a cultural shift to a society that does not tolerate the buying of human beings for sex.

Recognizing that lasting social change is established through sustained efforts, Demand Abolition is developing a decade-long, multi-stakeholder strategy to identify and promote pragmatic, sustainable, and evidence-based policies and programs to reduce demand. We will do this through research and evaluation, policy advocacy, training and technical assistance, network building, and increased philanthropy. To achieve our ambitious goal, Demand Abolition is building a team of creative, committed individuals eager to find innovative solutions to the seemingly intractable problem of purchased sex.

This is an opportunity for a bold, skilled, tactical, and experienced professional to play a leading strategic role in one of the most important movements of our time.

The managing director currently reports to the chief program officer and will work closely with the director of external relations, under the strategic guidance of Hunt Alternatives Fund Chair Swanee Hunt and President Sarah Gauger. S/he will work in close collaboration with the program committee of the board of directors, senior staff leadership and a talented, passionate internal team.

Responsibilities include:

Strategy and implementation (30%)

  • Collaborate with the director of external relations to implement and expand our strategy, particularly to partner with criminal justice professionals to promote broad systemic change and social transformation to reduce the demand for illegal commercial sex
  • Invest in establishing a strong, trust-based, mutually respectful relationship with his/her partner in leadership for the program and to evolve the roles as appropriate over time
  • Build on existing relationships to sustain and deepen shared ownership with multiple stakeholders including organizations and individuals across disciplines, sectors, and social movements; current stakeholders include survivors, corporate executives, criminal justice professionals, researchers, practitioners, faith-based groups and religious leaders, policymakers and others
  • Identify and cultivate untapped allies that are critical to the success of the initiative
  • Acting as external representative when the director of external relations is unavailable
  • Partnering with the director of communications to build out an effective communications strategy with innovative messaging, branding, and positioning of the program to an audience of constituents, donors, and the public

Management and internal oversight (25%)

  • Manage day-to-day operations, including building the capacity of staff members to operate as a strong effective team; overseeing hiring and performance review processes
  • Manage all aspect of internal reporting systems for the program, including weekly meetings with direct supervisor, regular meetings with the Fund chair, and overseeing the submission of written weekly status reports
  • Collaborate with director of external relations to solicit strategic and policy guidance from the program board committee chair and members; oversee active information sharing with board committee via regular committee meetings and monthly calls with board committee chair
  • Participate in bi-annual board meetings, board committee meetings, and regular senior management meetings
  • Identify consultants and solicit requests for proposals as needed
  • Oversee the development and execution of memorandums of understanding for all work

Fundraising (25%)

  • Develop a business and development plan for the national strategy in collaboration with appropriate senior development staff
  • Establish fundraising goals in collaboration with other program teams and development staff
  • Work with the chair, president, and appropriate senior development staff on donor identification, including foundations and individuals, cultivation, and stewardship, including foundations and individuals, to leverage funding for strategy implementers
  • Oversee the creation of the case statement and case proposals, and solicit major gifts
  • Collaborate with development and communications team leads to oversee the creation of fundraising collateral and case statements
  • Participate in solicitation of gifts

Budget oversight (20%)

  • Develop and implement a detailed work plan and budget for the program within the current program budget
  • Collaborate with Chief Financial Officer and senior development staff to incorporate any funds raised from external sources and ensure proper documentation and reporting

Ensure timely payment and accounting processes for all program expenses

Qualifications

  • Proven track record building and managing coalitions among diverse stakeholders, reaching consensus and action
  • Senior leadership experience designing, implementing, and managing a national initiatives highly preferred
  • Experience or ability to represent the Foundation, be a thought leader in the field, and interact with high-level political, nonprofit, law enforcement, philanthropic, academic, and corporate leaders on a national scale
  • Knowledge of/experience in the field of human trafficking or demand reduction is highly desirable
  • Knowledge of US state and federal policymaking; advocacy experience preferred
  • Successful fundraising and communications experience
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment where priorities change rapidly
  • Excellent personnel and project management skills; ability to manage diverse staff
  • Demonstrated personal integrity and ability to operate as highly effective team member
  • Comfort/experience working with/for a very strong founding principal
  • Exceptional organization, interpersonal, facilitation, and presentation skills;
  • Superior writing skills required
  • Domestic travel and occasional international travel required
