Canyon Ranch Institute - Grants and Communication Director

The Canyon Ranch Institute (CRI) Grants and Communication Director reports to the CRI Executive Director and serves as a member of the CRI senior management team. The Director is responsible for providing leadership for two primary organizational functions: (1) Grants and (2) Communication. For Grants, the Director identifies, secures, and sustains grant funding. For Communication, the Director leads CRI messaging using electronic and conventional channels. The Director supervises other CRI employees and collaborates with CRI team members, partners, potential partners, consultants, vendors, and stakeholders to help meet CRI’s Mission and Objectives (see http://canyonranchinstitute.org/about-cri/mission-a-principles). This position is located at CRI headquarters in Tucson, AZ.

COMPETENCIES

The successful candidate will have the following competencies:

  • Director-level experience with developing and implementing strategic plans and budgets, leading project management activities, and supervising staff.
  • Ability to fundraise through grants, including grant research and writing applicable to both government and non-government sources.
  • Comprehensive communication skill set, including writing and editing, website management, video and photo production, print production, and media relations.
  • Professional experience in public health, including in policy and community-based efforts, as well as a working knowledge of the role of measurement and evaluation in public health.
  • Professional demeanor and ability to appropriately adapt interpersonal skills to all situations in a way that reflects and projects the identity of the organization.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Related to Grants:

  • Continuously refines the grants section of the CRI Development Plan.
  • Leads efforts to secure grants from existing and newly identified government and non-government sources.
  • Provides CRI with a comprehensive approach to identifying appropriate grant opportunities and cultivating relationships, where possible, that provide ongoing information and resources about grant opportunities.
  • Serves as primary writer and/or editor on grant proposals.
  • Oversees procedures related to required documentation and acknowledgment of grants. In the case of denied proposals, ensures that funding organization is contacted to discuss reason for denial and determine whether a future submission is advisable.

2. Related to Communication:

  • Continuously refines the CRI Communication Plan.
  • Leads CRI’s communication-focused partnerships and programs.
  • Serves as lead for the design, production, distribution, and measurement of all CRI messaging and publications, both print and electronic, including social media. For example, directs the appearance of all CRI print and electronic materials, including but not limited to use of logo on websites, publications, media, etc.; monitors use of CRI Style Guide, including CRI copyrights and trademarks, and oversees all website and email deployment functions.
  • Maintains up-to-date documentation of processes, procedures, and reports applicable to CRI communication activities.
  • Oversees CRI’s use of stakeholder data base software (SalesForce.com) with methods and procedures that ensure data accuracy and efficiency.
  • Leads public relations duties including but not limited to preparation of news releases, developing relationships with media outlets, and responding to media inquiries.
  • Prepares and manages CRI communication budget.

3. Other essential duties and responsibilities:

  • Supervises the CRI Coordinator and the CRI Operations Coordinator, providing coaching and performance reviews; position may be expanded to include supervision of additional CRI employees.
  • Serves as CRI spokesperson and presenter.
  • Assists in planning and executing activities related to the CRI Board of Directors.
  • Supports development efforts as required.
  • Ensures that CRI’s principles, mission, objectives, and strategies are pertinent and practiced throughout CRI.
  • Maintains thorough knowledge of all CRI partnerships and programs, relevant public health topics, non-profit organization and management, and related terminology, and uses this information to help CRI operate with innovation.
  • Maintains a collaborative organizational culture that attracts, retains, and motivates top-quality personnel, both paid and volunteer.

REQUIREMENTS

Education

Bachelor’s degree in public administration, communication, public health, or related field is required. Master’s degree preferred. (Proof of degree is required.) Certification / License

None required.

Experience

  • Minimum five years of progressively responsible experience working in a professional management capacity with responsibilities relevant to this position.
  • Progressively responsible professional experience with identifying, organizing, and writing successful grant applications or proposals for health-related organizations and programs.
  • Progressively responsible professional experience in all aspects of communication.

Other Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of health policy, health disparities, and health literacy.
  • Communication skills tailored to public health, health care, and scientific research topics.
  • Highly self-motivated and organized, and able to work efficiently without daily management or supervision.
  • Proven ability to prioritize and process multiple complex projects and deadlines with attention to detail and organization.
  • Proven ability to work effectively in collaborative team environments.
  • Proven ability to supervise staff members.
  • Proven ability to impeccably develop, write, and deliver presentations, speeches, and materials for national conferences and events.
  • Proven ability to provide creative approaches and solutions to assignments and projects.
  • Proven ability to develop and manage budgets.
  • Proven ability to work at the leadership level in developing, implementing, and managing strategic plans.
  • Knowledge of challenges unique to non-profit organizations.
  • Technical skills, to include current mastery of PC computer environment and Microsoft Office tools, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, as well as ability to develop mastery of website content management system (Joomla-based) and e-newsletter software (Constant Contact).
  • A commitment to improving the health and well-being of all people worldwide, particularly underserved communities and populations.
