Development Officer

Silicon Valley Community Foundation
Mountain View, California

Silicon Valley Community Foundation - Development Officer Reporting to the Chief Philanthropic Development and Information Officer, the Development Officer is responsible for supporting the strategy that seeks to support Silicon Valley Community Foundation’s role as the center of philanthropy and the premier philanthropic partner for charitably minded individuals and corporations. In addition, this person will have the opportunity to reach out to the nonprofits in our region to inform them about Silicon Valley Community Foundation’s many services for the benefit of nonprofits and community groups interested in becoming nonprofits. The development work this individual will engage in is key to the community foundation’s ability to raise at least $300 million annually and open in excess of 100 funds per year. The successful candidate will need to activate many skills and function in a variety of roles including charitable fund expert, administrator, facilitator, storyteller and advocate.

Wages commensurate with experience (FULL TIME/EXEMPT).

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Proactively prospect for new individual and corporate donors as well as nonprofit partners to the community foundation.
  • Reach out to, follow up with, manage and actively steward assigned prospects who have contacted the community foundation directly or have been referred by staff, colleagues, current fund advisors or other key stakeholders.
  • Initiate and complete both the opening of new funds and outright gifts to the community foundation’s strategic initiatives and endowment fund.
  • Take the lead on complicated gift transactions, including gifts of closely held and pre-IPO stock transfers.
  • Work closely with the VP of development and business services, and others across the community foundation, to broaden the profile of fund advisors and organizations currently working with the community foundation to include a broader representation of the diverse community we live in and serve.
  • Maintain a portfolio of active professional advisor relationships, arranging frequent meetings with advisors keeping them informed on charitable vehicles’ offered by the community foundation and strategic initiatives that may be of interest to their clients.
  • Remain informed on legal, accounting, investment and technology issues as they affect charitable giving, in particular corporate giving and the donation of in-kind services and products.
  • Attend and participate in industry conferences, events and networks as assigned to establish significant visibility for the community foundation.
  • Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in Public Policy, Sociology, Finance, English, Business or related discipline.
  • Ability to work independently and make both strategic and tactical decisions.
  • Unwavering commitment to customer service and providing prompt, professional responses to all prospect inquiries.
  • 5+ years demonstrated experience in a sophisticated development or business development environment.
  • Demonstrated success in acquiring, developing and retaining donor or client relationships resulting in significant support for an organization.
  • Demonstrated expertise in complex and large gift transactions including planned gifts, gifts of complex or illiquid assets and real property preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of tax matters and other legal requirements related to fundraising. Demonstrated effort to maintain and grow knowledge in these areas.
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent people and project management skills, with ability to work with diverse groups.
