NatureBridge - Pacific Northwest Grants Officer

This is a full-time position with NatureBridge.

A part of the national development team, the Pacific Northwest Grants Officer will be responsible for sustaining, stewarding, and growing a strong base of institutional funders in the Pacific Northwest and nationally to support NatureBridge and our programs. The position will be based in Seattle and will require occasional travel to the NatureBridge campus in Olympic National Park and the NatureBridge office in San Francisco. This position will work in partnership with the Pacific Northwest Individual Giving Officer and Pacific Northwest Director and will be a part of the national grants team and development department. This position reports to the Grants Manager, who is located in the San Francisco office.

The Pacific Northwest Grants Officer will be expected to:

  • Grow NatureBridge’s funding base through strategic prospect identification, research, and cultivation. Funders include corporations, foundations, and government agencies in the Pacific Northwest and nationally.
  • Plan, write, and submit well-conceived, compelling letters of inquiry, grant proposals, and reports for high quality stewardship and relationship-building strategies.
  • Partner with regional and national NatureBridge staff to support the work of the development department as well as the mission and strategic vision of the organization as a whole.

Duties & Responsibilities

Prospect Research

  • Research, identify, rank, and cultivate new corporate, foundation, and government grant prospects using qualitative and quantitative methods, including electronic screening, database mining, data modeling, and relationship-building strategies.
  • Compose concise analytical briefs and reports that synthesize prospecting and Moves Management activities effectively and present a well-reasoned plan of action.
  • Develop a comprehensive strategy for meeting annual fundraising goals, raising NatureBridge’s profile in the Pacific Northwest, and engaging new funders by working closely with campus staff and director, national development staff, senior leadership team, and the Olympic Board to support NatureBridge campuses, programs, and national initiatives. Create a culture of philanthropy.

Corporate, Foundation, and Government Relations

  • Produce academic-quality literature reviews to write compelling, research-based narratives and well-conceived letters of inquiry, grant proposals, and reports.
  • Work collaboratively to produce all required materials to accompany institutional grants, including budgets, financial data, staff biographies, required forms, etc.
  • Manage proposal packages via grant websites or submission protocols, monitor progress and outcomes, and sustain institutional funders through thoughtful, individualized stewardship strategies.

Development Operations

  • Coordinate meetings between NatureBridge leadership, board of directors, and institutional funders (current and prospective); attend regional and national grants team meetings, development department meetings, regular check-ins with the Grants Manager, and retreats.
  • Carefully track all activities and input information into NatureBridge’s donor database (Raiser’s Edge), update internal records (electronic and hard files), deliver timely gift acknowledgement letters, and prepare quarterly work plans and internal reports to assure progress toward funding goals.
  • Collaborate with other grants team members in editing and proofreading written materials; partner with the Pacific Northwest Individual Giving Officer on development department strategies and donor logistics.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Experience, Competencies, & Education

The ideal candidate will possess a combination of the following education and/or equivalent experience:

  • Commitment to the mission of NatureBridge.
  • At least three years of professional fundraising experience with working knowledge of the local, regional, and national funding landscape.
  • Experience conducting extensive prospect research and writing high-quality, successful grant proposals leading to new institutional funders.
  • Effective and efficient data management experience (Raiser’s Edge highly desirable), including all elements of proposal tracking, gift processing, and progress reporting.
  • Ability to bring together staff from different departments and levels of the organization in order to prepare and produce key deliverables.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills; flexibility, sense of humor, and an entrepreneurial ‘can-do’ attitude are highly desirable.
  • Availability for occasional travel to NatureBridge locations.
  • Bachelor’s degree from a four-year college or university or equivalent work and education experience.

The writing sample should be a letter of inquiry or grant proposal (or excerpt) written by the applicant with appropriate context provided in order to understand and assess the writing sample.
