Society
The Wilderness Society (TWS), a national nonprofit organization whose mission
is to protect wilderness and inspire Americans to care for our wild places, is
seeking an experienced full-time Senior Director, Digital Strategy to
join its Communications & Marketing team in Washington, DC.
The Senior Director, Digital Strategy is responsible for designing and
implementing digital acquisition, conversion and retention strategies for The
Wilderness Society’s digital program. The Senior Director will work
closely with fundraising, advocacy and marketing leadership to define a vision
for The Wilderness Society’s digital priorities.
Expectations & Responsibilities:

Strategic direction of all digital programs of The Wilderness
Society, managing the department’s budget, staff and accountability;

Lead and manage TWS’ digital team and integrate that team into
The Wilderness Society's multidisciplinary, collaborative environment;

Define departmental expectations, objectives and measurement systems,
while providing an environment for professional growth;
- Strategically manage the digital infrastructure, including the Drupal
Content Management System (CMS) and Convio Constituent Relationship Management
(CRM) and related resources and vendor relationships;
- Directing the web content strategy, social media and search engine
programs;
- Optimizing the user experience across all web properties and
transaction channels;
- Directing technical production of digital projects and tactics;

Leading the organization in online organizing and advocacy;
- Directing the building of campaign websites and pages;
- Managing the daily web and digital needs of the organization;
- Building the capacity of The Wilderness Society stakeholders to
execute digital initiatives and campaigns;
Managing third-party vendors in the execution of digital
strategies;
- Defining and managing process, workflow and governance across digital
programs;
- Increasing brand awareness and customer loyalty via digital channels;
- Improving the supporter and donor experience online;
- Web and performance analytics and user testing.
Qualifications: The ideal candidate should have the following qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in marketing, business, human factors or a
related field. Master’s degree preferred;
- 10+ years of digital strategy and marketing experience;
- Success record of overcoming challenges and driving results in the
digital space;
- A professional background that includes extensive and successful
experience in digital strategy and implementation;
- An understanding of the unique communications challenges faced by
not-for-profit advocacy organizations and direct and substantive experience in
surmounting those challenges;
- A demonstrated sensitivity to the sometimes conflicting agendas of
internal and external audiences that are a necessary part of the dynamics of any
complex organization—and the ability to effectively manage these
conflicts.
Skills & Abilities: The ideal candidate should have extensive background in:
- Directing digital acquisition, conversion and retention
strategies;
- Prioritizing the diverse and evolving demands from a large or
dispersed organization;
- Advocating for digital needs among the competing priorities of the
larger organization;
- Managing digital platforms and infrastructure;
- Leading the ongoing development of enterprise websites, ensuring
sites are relevant and user friendly and a best in class.
- Directing successful issues-based digital campaigning and organizing
programs;
- Enterprise-level product, program and project management;
- Leadership experience and experience managing blended teams of
internal and external stakeholders and service providers;
- Results- and performance-driven market and consumer research.
- Web site optimization and operations;
- E-commerce and inbound and outbound digital marketing management.
- Strong attention to detail, proactive communication and ability to
inspire and motivate;
- Flexible and supportive management style, which fosters
self-direction and growth among team members.
