The Institute for Transportation and Development Policy (ITDP) promotes sustainable and equitable transport worldwide. ITDP is a nonprofit organization headquartered in New York City with offices in China, India, Indonesia, Brazil, Argentina, Mexico City and the United States. ITDP’s programs focus on bus rapid transit, non-motorized travel, travel demand management, parking, transport policy and urban development. More information about ITDP can be found at www.itdp.org.
This position will help lead ITDP’s external communications as the organization scales up its efforts to address climate change, poverty alleviation and sustainable development.
Position
The External Communications and Marketing Manager will report to the Chief Information Officer (CIO). S/he will be expected to work flexibly and creatively with colleagues around the world, as well as those responsible for development, strategic initiatives and global policy. S/he will be part of the communications and development team, which includes the CIO, the Development Director, and the Strategic Initiatives and Internal Communications Associate.
RESPONSIBILITIES
General External Communications Planning and Strategy

Develop organization’s overall external communications strategy, working with CIO.

Develop integrated external communications plans for individual initiatives, with special attention to online and social media strategies, as well as traditional media.

Work with senior team to ensure branding guidelines are followed among the various properties of the organization (ITDP, STA, OCO, BRT Standard).
Contribute to the development of programs by supporting the communications capacity of field offices.

Coordinate monthly communication calls with the field office communications staff, including logistics, developing agenda, hosting the calls, and taking and disseminating notes.

Work collaboratively with the Development Director to integrate outreach efforts and enhance public awareness and fundraising opportunities.
PR and Social Media

Organize public relations efforts, including drafting press releases/advisories, talking points, and FAQs, as needed.

Serve as initial contact for general inquiries and fulfill requests for information and outreach materials from partners. Filter and manage online “contact us” and press inquiries.

Ensure consistent use of messaging in print materials, email promotions, website copy, and other mediums and that the content promotes the organization’s objectives.

Ensure knowledge and communications products have a dissemination plan, are appropriately branded, well edited, and on message.

Develop and implement a strategy for ITDP’s online presence, including Transport Matters (the blog on ITDP’s site), the Our Cities Ourselves site, STA, BRT Standard, and ITDP’s social media presence (including Twitter, Facebook and Flickr).

Create content for social media and ITDP website & build ITDP Flickr account and video library.

Plan international events, such as the Sustainable Transport Award

Support events in the US and work to leverage them for greater impact through communications. This may be in support of fundraising, US BRT, etc.
Website and Content Development

Manage the ITDP and OCO websites, including writing copy, posting resources, creating new pages.

Write fresh clear compelling copy and blog posts for online publication or use in a variety of marketing materials.

Write, collect content from field offices, edit, publish and grow subscribership of ITDP's monthly e-newsletter (current circulation approx. 4,000).

Draft, edit and disseminate communications materials such as newsletters, fact sheets, brochures, newsletters, annual report, and other materials as required.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

5 – 7 years of experience in public relations or communications
-
BA/BS required
-
Strong communicator with excellent written, oral and interpersonal communication skills

Experience writing for online content – blog, online magazines
-
Experience with HTML, Content Management Systems
-
Experience working with social media
-
Highly proficient in MS office and Adobe Creative Suites – specifically InDesign, Photoshop
-
Ability to work both independently and as part of a team in a fast paced environment

Commitment to quality and attention to detail

Ability to multi task and handle short term deadlines and conflicting priorities

Should demonstrate a high level of integrity and professionalism.
Preferred:
-
Knowledge of Expression Engine CMS platform
-
Knowledge of transportation, international development, and/or urban planning issues

Language proficiency in Chinese, Portuguese, Spanish, Indonesian a plus
SALARY & COMPENSATION
This job pays 65-75K commensurating with experience. ITDP offers a highly competitive benefits package including health benefits, a retirement matching plan, Flexible Spending Acccounts, and generous PTO and vacation days.
