Teach For America - Director, Alumni Affairs
At the beginning of last school year, Teach For America had nearly 500 school and school system leaders, more than 20 elected officials, and five new social entrepreneurs. They joined more than 4,000 teachers, 200 assistant principals, and many others who demonstrate their leadership in high-impact policy roles, on nonprofit boards of directors, through their philanthropy dollars, and by taking action against educational inequity in their local communities. Our alumni team works to accelerate the path of our alumni to critical positions of impact and leadership.
Teach For America seeks a Director of Alumni Affairs in the New York region to maximize the reach and impact of the movement while accelerating their leadership through connecting alumni to each other, to great opportunities, and to the work of Teach For America. This position provides an opportunity for an individual to play a critical role in rallying our alumni who are building the movement from various sectors across the country. The Director of Alumni Affairs will work to support our alumni initiative areas of alumni engagement, school leadership and community engagement in New York. In addition, she or he will work to build an alumni base that is informed and active in the broader movement for educational equity. At the beginning of the 2012-13 school year, there are over 3,300 alumni in New York who are working to close the achievement gap from all sectors, including over 100 principals, more than 40 officials at the Department of Education, and hundreds of teachers, as well as many alumni working in the private sector, public policy, or running for elected office.
Team Overview
Founded in 1990, Teach For America - New York has approximately 500 corps members reaching more than 26,000 students across New York. Additionally, more than 2,600 alumni are working from all sectors to close the achievement gap in the area, with more than 600 working directly for the New York City Department of Education or public charter schools as teachers or administrators. The region is supported by a local funding base of $12.8 million, and regional staff members work to train and support corps members, continually strengthen relationships with principals and local communities, foster the leadership of local alumni, and continue to grow the regional funding base to ensure that Teach For America - New York can have an even greater impact.
Candidate Profile and Experience Prerequisites
Education and experience
- Bachelor's degree required
- 5-7 years of professional experience preferred
- Prior recruitment, community organizing, or career counseling experience are a plus
- Teach For America alumni highly preferred
- Experience managing projects to reach and exceed ambitious goals required
Skills
- Superb interpersonal skills
- Exceptional oral and written communication skills
- Proven ability to develop and leverage relationships toward achievement of concrete goals
- Strong critical thinking skills; must be able to analyze a problem or opportunity and identify appropriate strategies
- Excellent organizational and management skills with a demonstrated ability to project manage an event or initiative from start to finish (strong execution skills)
- Approach to Work
- Adaptable to an entrepreneurial, fast-paced, diverse, results-oriented culture
- A self-starter able to operate independently
Technical Skills
Familiarity with suite of Microsoft tools including Power Point, Excel and Word
