To support program development and strategic positioning of Grantmakers In Health. Responsible for overseeing and supervising program staff, developing new programming in conjunction with program staff, working with the President and CEO to cultivate external relations and new ventures for the organization, and integrating planning, communications, and development strategies to sustain and build the organization.
Core Responsibilities
Knowledge Generation: Leads work to conceptualize, develop, and implement projects and publications that synthesize the work of health philanthropy around specific health topics and strategies. Designs and manages activities to link grantmakers to their colleagues in the field and to policymakers. Identifies innovative activities and thinkers in the field. Initiates and develops new ideas to serve the organization’s constituency better.
Program Development and Management: Plays a central role in determining programmatic priorities. Defines scope and develops strategic plan of action for major areas of work, including new ventures, as well as for specific programs and products. Responsible for day-to-day management of program staff and major projects. Conceptualizes and develops long-range strategies for sharing information on health issues, policy developments, and best practices with both grantmakers and policymakers. Oversees the development and maintenance of the GIH Resource Center, including database on health philanthropy. Manages the Issue Dialogue series, including the meeting content and subsequent publications. Takes the lead in planning the programs for GIH’s two major national meetings: the Annual Meeting on Health Philanthropy and Fall Forum. Plans other workshops and meeting sessions on both strategic and health issue topics. Writes reports, newsletter articles, and other
pieces to communicate about the work of health philanthropy. Supervises editorial content of Issue Focus for GIH Bulletin.
Front-line Reviewer: Reviews in detail all GIH documents (including reports, articles, and meeting materials) and gives feedback to staff to ensure consistently high-quality publications.
Executive Team Member: As part of three-person executive team, integrally involved in development and direction of communications, development, strategic planning, budgeting, and other aspects of organization management. Staffs committees of the board of directors.
External Relations: Plays a lead role in representing GIH at public functions, maintaining relations with senior foundation staff, and responding to press inquiries. Actively pursues opportunities to speak and write articles about health philanthropy and GIH’s activities. Works with other organizations in the health, policy, and philanthropic communities on collaborative projects of interest. Acts as liaison to government staff and the research and policy communities.
Fundraising: Identifies and cultivates new sources of support for GIH activities. Works with the chief operating officer to develop and implement the organization’s broader fundraising strategies.
Reporting Relationships
Responsible to president/CEO. Consults with the vice president for finance and administration. Supervises program director and associates, and communications manager.
Qualifications
At least 10 years experience conducting policy analysis and a graduate degree in a health-related field are preferred. Knowledge of current health policy issues and the health care system. Experience working with policymakers. Skills in project management and coordination. Strong writing and communications skills. Experience in the nonprofit sector. Application Instructions
