Brooklyn Botanic Garden - Campaign Manager

PRIMARY OBJECTIVE: The Campaign Manager assists in the hands-on management of BBG’s $100 million Campaign for the Next Century. This includes helping to identify, cultivate, solicit and steward donors and developing and maintaining systems for tracking and implementing these activities. This position is part of an overall 14 member department that in addition to raising funds for the Campaign is responsible for raising approximately $5 million in annual operating support. The Campaign Manager works in partnership with the Managing Director of the Campaign and Major Gifts to raise the remaining $19 million in private funding needed to complete the Campaign over the next two to three years.This is a term position for the remaining two to three year course of the Campaign.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES/ACTIVITIES:

In partnership with the Managing Director of the Campaign and Major Gifts, assist with the research, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of Campaign prospects. The Campaign Manager provides direct supervision of the Campaign Coordinator and volunteers as available.

Research and identify individual prospects for the Campaign

  • Prepare in-depth profiles on individual, corporate and foundation prospects including background and financial research.
  • Identify possible new sources of funding for the Campaign and Major Gifts.
  • Track press coverage of issues, people and institutions involved in BBG’s world.

Manage the cultivation and solicitation process

  • Manage a select portfolio of prospects for cultivation and solicitation.
  • Develop cultivation strategies and written solicitation plans for priority prospects.
  • Write customized proposals for individual Campaign funding prospects.
  • Refine, update and monitor the Campaign prospect tracker and fundraising reports drawn from Raiser’s Edge data-base.
  • Manage mini-campaigns within the larger campaign to solicit support from special constituencies such as volunteers and various membership groups.
  • Liaise with Education, Horticulture, Science and other divisions to stay abreast of funding needs and cultivation opportunities.
  • Plan, manage and attend Campaign cultivation events including receptions, site tours, lunches and dinners.
  • Assist in the preparation of presentation and event materials

Steward Campaign donors

  • Write and design annual in-depth narrative and financial reports for individual Campaign donors on progress and impact of the various Campaign components including Capital Projects, Endowment and Program Development.
  • Liaise with program directors and other staff to ensure that the terms and conditions of Campaign gifts are understood and carried out in accordance with the donor’s intentions.
  • Supervise the implementation of the campaign dedicated website and oversee other web and social media updates.
  • Supervise the implementation of recognition materials including plaques, donor wall and other materials where Campaign donors are credited.
  • Liaise with Finance team to reconcile fundraising reports and budget allocations.
  • Supervise gift tracking, acknowledgements, pledge payments, correspondence, event planning, scheduling, preparation of materials and all other activities of the Campaign Coordinator.
  • Communicate with Campaign and Major Gift donors/prospects as well as Trustees in person, on the phone and in writing. Maintain confidentiality of donor information.
  • Work with Institutional Funding team on Campaign proposals as needed.
  • Work with overall Development & Membership team on project development and long-range planning, including support of BBG’s three to five major annual events.
  • Assist with departmental events and activities, as assigned.
  • Other duties as assigned by Supervisor.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Bachelor’s degree required Masters pref. 5+ years of development experience, and interest in cultural or environmental organizations preferred. Prior capital campaign and/or major gifts experience highly desired. Excellent interpersonal, organizational, computer and writing skills required. Raiser’s Edge fundraising software proficiency and familiarity with Lexis Nexus required. Candidate must be detail-oriented, able to meet deadlines, work on multiple projects and interact with trustees, donors and staff at all levels. Looking for a creative, energetic team player, with a good sense of humor and a strong desire to succeed. Available to work evenings and occasional weekends to help meet pressing deadlines and support events during the Garden’s peak season (September-October; March-June). Lifting and carrying of event and tour materials as needed.
