Director of National Center for Juvenile Justice

National Council of Juvenile and Family Court Judges
Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

National Council of Juvenile and Family Court Judges - Director of National Center for Juvenile Justice Salary Range: $98,000 – $120,000 per annum, DOE
FLSA Status: Exempt

The National Council of Juvenile and Family Court Judges (NCJFCJ), a non-profit organization headquartered in Reno, NV, is seeking a Director of its research division, the National Center for Juvenile Justice (NCJJ, located in Pittsburgh, PA), to build on our exceptional 75-year record of improving courts and systems’ practice and raising awareness of the core issues that touch the lives of many of our nation’s children and families. As a leader in continuing education opportunities, research, publication development, technical assistance, and policy development in the field of juvenile and family justice, the NCJFCJ is unique in providing practice-based resources to jurisdictions and communities nationwide.

The mission of NCJFCJ is to provide all judges, courts, and related agencies involved with juvenile, family, and domestic violence cases with the knowledge and skills to improve the lives of the families and children who seek justice. Research is a vital component of NCJFCJ’s efforts to improve the lives of children and families. Since its inception in 1973 in Pittsburgh, PA, NCJJ (www.ncjj.org) has been a resource for statistics and independent and original research on topics related directly and indirectly to the field of juvenile justice.

NCJJ’s work looks at the nature of juvenile crime in the United States including occurrence, trends, and victimization, as well as the response of the justice system to these matters. Through empirical research and program evaluations, NCJJ works to improve the effectiveness and fairness of juvenile justice system processing, improve the outcomes of its many prevention and intervention programs, and guide policy development. NCJJ remains the country’s only non-profit research organization concentrating solely on the juvenile justice system and the prevention of juvenile delinquency and child abuse and neglect.

NCJJ values staff who are independent, creative, tenacious, resourceful, dependable, and passionate about their work. NCJJ offers a collaborative work environment in a modern riverside location on Pittsburgh’s rapidly developing south side.

The primary functions of the position of Director of NCJJ are leadership of the department and to achieve and sustain NCJJ’s purposes and objectives, which are:

  • To examine the nature of and to implement the development and improvement of juvenile and family courts and the laws pertaining thereto, encouraging the progressive administration of juvenile justice and family law and all of its components by independent research, technical assistance, and the dissemination of information.
  • To develop, interpret and maintain data and knowledge about juvenile and family court matters and serve as the locus for a social intelligence system that can assist juvenile and family courts in anticipating and effectively responding to shifts in attitudes and behaviors of children, youth, families, victims, other social systems, and the general public.
  • To study and test methods of treating children and families in need of help, voluntarily and outside the court system whenever possible.
  • To disseminate to judges, court personnel, other disciplines, and any interested persons by any means, the knowledge and information thus acquired.
  • To act as consultant for any court or agency addressing the needs of juveniles and/or families.

The Director of NCJJ is responsible for the management, operations, and development of the department. The Director reports directly to and works closely with the Chief Program Officer (CPO) and the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the NCJFCJ, actively participates on the NCJFCJ management team, and works closely in partnership with other program directors within the organization. The Director also works collaboratively with the Board of Trustees and the Board of Fellows Advisory Committees.

In concert with the CEO, CPO, and Board of Trustees, the Director of NCJJ serves as a representative of the NCJFCJ to key stakeholders and supporters such as other national organizations, service organizations, funding bodies and foundations, government agencies, and the media.

The successful candidate for this position must be able to relocate to Pittsburgh, PA, and possess the capability to address geographical challenges inherent in communicating and collaborating with NCJFCJ headquarters.
