Legal Services NYC - Director of Development

Legal Services NYC (LS-NYC) is looking for a Development Director to lead and expand its fundraising efforts.

Organizational Description

LS-NYC is the largest provider of free civil legal services for low-income people in the country. LS-NYC is dedicated to fighting poverty by providing high-quality legal assistance in a wide range of matters that affect low-income people and the communities they live in, including housing, family law, public benefits, education, employment, consumer fraud, foreclosure prevention, community development and disability rights. LS-NYC has special projects that provide legal assistance to vulnerable populations, including, immigrants, children, people with HIV, veterans, and seniors. See www.LS-NYC.org.

LS-NYC has an annual budget of $40 million. About two-thirds of our revenue is from government sources and about one-third is from private donations and foundation grants and contracts. Fundraising is handled by our central office in partnership with our local offices in all five boroughs.

Position & Responsibilities

The Director of Development is responsible for all aspects of fundraising including foundation, law firm, individual, and corporate giving. The Director of Development is a senior manager and reports directly to the Executive Director. The development department currently includes a development associate and a part-time grant writer, but we plan to expand staffing as additional resources are secured.

The Development Director will be expected to think strategically and creatively in growing our fundraising program, and will be expected to maintain and strengthen relationships with current funders while cultivating new relationships with philanthropic and corporate foundations, law firms, major gift donors and others. S/he will also work closely with members of the Board of Directors and staff throughout the program. The Development Director is responsible for producing Jazz for Justice, Legal Services NYC’s annual fundraising gala, and for producing our annual report as well as other reports and promotional materials.

Qualifications

LS-NYC seeks a development professional with a proven track record and at least the following qualifications:

  • Minimum of BA/BS degree;
  • Five years of development experience, preferably in the legal or human services field;
  • Demonstrated success in raising funds and developing relationships, especially with foundations, law firms, corporations and individual donors;
  • Knowledge of New York City’s philanthropic community;
  • Excellent writing, editing, and oral presentation skills; and
  • Excellent organizational, communication and leadership skills.
