Carnegie Council for Ethics in International Affairs - Director of Development

Founded in 1914 by Andrew Carnegie, Carnegie Council for Ethics in International Affairs is a New York institution with global reach. For nearly 100 years the Council has promoted voices for ethics in international relations education and policy. As it approaches its Centennial, the Council is raising its visibility and impact around the world. Through its Ethics Studio, the Council produces multimedia programs for television, radio, and web audiences worldwide. Its Global Ethics Network of Fellows is active in two dozen countries in Asia, Europe, Latin America, North America, and the Middle East.

Carnegie Council seeks a Director of Development to implement our strategic development plan and manage all fund-raising activities including establishing and growing a major gifts portfolio, pursuing foundation grants, and building corporate relations and sponsorship. The Director will work with the President, Carnegie's senior program staff, and Board of Trustees to raise money from a diverse and sophisticated donor base.

The ideal candidate will have superior social, project management, administrative, and writing skills to be able to competently represent the organization to donors, prospects, and the public. The position requires proven managerial and strategic planning skills, as well as experience working in a fast-paced and entrepreneurial environment. He or she will be diplomatic, of the highest integrity, and possess sound judgment and interpersonal skills.

Requirements

Major Gifts: Develop and manage a portfolio of current and prospective donors capable of making major gifts

  • Develop and implement comprehensive solicitation strategies to secure major donations
  • Build long-term relationships with donors and prospects; identify and cultivate donors' interests in the organization

Board and Leadership: Support Carnegie Council President, Senior Program Directors, and trustees in the identification, cultivation, and solicitation donors and prospects

  • Work closely with the Carnegie senior leadership and Board to set financial and donor activity goals
  • Lead and support the efforts of the Board's development committee
  • Create briefing memos and donor presentations in preparation for donor meetings
  • Plan and support cultivation events and dinners as needed

Management and Coordination: Serve as strategic leader for all fund-raising related efforts to ensure a coordinated and strategic program

  • Oversee portfolio and tracking system for all development efforts, including Major and Planned Gifts, Corporate and Foundation support
  • Convene senior staff for regular meetings to actively manage, coordinate, and build strategies for all development activities (membership, sponsorship, cultivation events, individual meetings, etc.)
  • Provide regular development reports to Carnegie's leadership that benchmark how much has been raised, number of donors, and donor activity
  • Track prospect and donor contacts in a donor information system
  • Maintain annual development budget
  • Works closely with President, Vice President, and Senior Program Directors
  • Supported by Membership Services

Writing and Proposals: Oversee all correspondence including proposals, grant reports, acknowledgements, and follow-up notes for major donors and prospects

  • Create presentations and proposals for donor briefings and solicitations
  • Assist in drafting foundation and corporate proposals

Knowledge, Skills and Experience Needed:

  • Successful track record in fund raising from major donors and foundations, or demonstrated ability to generate revenue
  • Entrepreneurial, strategic thinker with a proven record of working independently
