A Better Chance - Development Assistant (Part-Time)
A Better Chance is the preeminent national resource for identifying, recruiting and developing leaders among young people of color throughout the United States. Through its historic signature program, the College Preparatory Schools Program, A Better Chance has placed more than 13,000 middle, junior and high school students in some of the nation’s finest college preparatory schools, both private and public, since 1963. Once students graduate from their A Better Chance school, they become the organization’s “Alumni.”
A Better Chance is commemorating its 50th anniversary in 2013 and is seeking a part-time, temporary Development Assistant to support its celebration and fundraising activities.
Overall Function
The Development Assistant will be responsible for supporting overall Development department activities, including:

Assisting with the creation of communications materials related to individual giving
-
Drafting grant proposals and reports under the supervision of the institutional Giving Manager
-
Performing statistical analysis of educational data
-
Researching reports and primary articles that support the work of A Better Chance.

Communicating directly with Alumni and donors of A Better Chance on behalf of the organization, including:

Recruiting volunteers for A Better Chance events across the country, such as Interview Days, Morgan Stanley Career Panels, and Alumni Phonathons

Contacting donors to confirm contact and acknowledgement information

Contacting Alumni to confirm contact information in the organization’s donor database, Raiser’s Edge (RE), and solicit contributions

Assisting with formation of host committees of Alumni and donors for 50th Anniversary events

Implementing Alumni outreach email campaigns with the Development and Marketing Associate
- Work with Programs Department staff to ensure coordination of Development and Programs calendars
- Work with staff to enhance our social media strategy, and actively post and maintain our presence on sites, such as Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter
- Work with staff to produce marketing materials and communications vehicles, such as writing for a trimesterly newsletter, and work on special projects
- Producing reports on individual donors from RE
- Conducting research on potential donors, corporations and foundations
- Maintaining and updating files on individual donors
- Administrative tasks (e.g., mailings) and additional assignments as needed
Qualifications
This position offers an exciting and substantive learning opportunity to the right candidate about nonprofit development and marketing. The Development Assistant will learn the ins-and-outs of a national nonprofit agency from experienced and talented professionals in a high-caliber and professional environment. The right candidate will possess:

BA/BS degree, or three or more years of higher education towards earning a Bachelor’s degree as a current student

An ability to dedicate at least 24-30 hours per week to the position

1-2 years of professional experience OR two college semesters’ worth of internship experience in an office environment

A willingness and flexibility to learn, and the ability to learn quickly
-
Excellent and professional phone manner

An ability to pay close attention to detail
-
An ability to work in a fast-paced environment and manage multiple assignments from multiple staff members
-
An ability to receive constructive feedback and immediately apply such feedback in future work
-
Excellent writing, research, and interpersonal skills
-
Integrity to maintain a consistent work schedule throughout the position’s tenure
This position is supervised by the Individual Giving and Alumni Relations Manager. Pay is accounted for hourly up to 30 hours per week. This position does not qualify for benefits. This position is available for a 12-month term. The ideal start date for this position is September 10, 2012.
