The Harlem School of the Arts (HSA) is a nearly 50 year old nonprofit, 501(c) 3, community arts school offering high-quality training in dance, music, theatre, visual arts and most recently added musical theatre to 3,000+ students annually. Founded in 1964, HSA’s mission is to enrich the lives of young people through exposure to, and education in the arts. Today, HSA offers onsite instruction to children ages 2 through 18 from Harlem, Upper Manhattan, Brooklyn, the Bronx, Westchester, New Jersey and Connecticut, and over 2,500 students in 17 New York City public schools through our unique arts-based in-school and after-school programs.
Summary
The Harlem School of the Arts seeks to hire a full-time Director of Development to join its senior management team. The ideal candidate is a fearless, strategically-focused development professional capable of leading a robust, multifaceted development department for an arts institution with a rich tradition and history in Harlem. The Development Director will be responsible for implementing and managing the fundraising strategy for the organization, which includes private funding from foundations, corporations, and individuals, as well as government support. S/he will report to the President & CEO, will manage a staff of two, and will be responsible for raising over half of the organization’s operating budget.
The ideal candidate will have five to ten years of experience in fundraising with a proven record of meeting and exceeding goals and managing staff. S/he will have excellent interpersonal skills and will be able to work effectively and collaboratively with the Executive Director, board members, committee members, staff, partners and funders to ensure the successful achievement of fundraising efforts. A demonstrated love of the arts would be considered an asset and a strong belief in the value and importance of an arts education is essential.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
- Bachelor’s degree
- Master’s degree, a plus
Experience
- Minimum of 5 - 10 years of professional development experience, preferably in an arts organization
- A thorough working knowledge of the technical details required for managing a portfolio of foundations, government agencies, major individual donors and corporations
- Major gift experience
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Highly organized with the ability to work on multiple detailed projects simultaneously as well as work on short deadlines
- Polished and professional personal presentation
Technical Proficiencies
Demonstrated proficiencies in the use of:
- Raisers Edge software
- Microsoft Office Suite including PowerPoint
