Boston University Center for Global Health & Development - Field Director

The Center for Global Health and Development (CGHD) at Boston University is seeking a Field Director for the Zambia Chlorhexidine Application Trial (ZamCAT). ZamCAT is a field-based study to test the effectiveness of a topical antiseptic, chlorhexidine, as an umbilical cord wash to prevent neonatal infection and mortality. In this proposed cluster-randomized control trial, chlorhexidine wash will be applied to the umbilical cord of newborns in the intervention arm; newborns in the control arm will receive the World Health Organization standard of care (dry cord care). In order to complete the study, over 28,000 live births will be enrolled and followed to 28 days post-partum over a 2.5-year period.

Job Description: The Field Director will serve as the Zambian-based lead of ZamCAT, providing the necessary technical leadership, guidance, operational and financial management to attain the study’s goals and objectives. The Field Director will be based in Choma, Zambia (Southern Province) and will provide technical and administrative oversight for study implementation, including supervision of a field staff of approximately 150 persons. The Field Director will be expected to liaise with high-level Governmental of Zambia MOH officials, maintain consistent communication with the Boston-based study team, and provide leadership to ensure that all project components are implemented in an integrated and coordinated fashion with attention to maintaining scientific rigor. The Field Director will oversee the management of the project budget and effectively manage resource allocation required for project implementation. Successful candidates will possess outstanding leadership abilities, high-level verbal and written communication skills, cultural sensitivity, and must have the ability to work independently, manage multiple tasks, and have an entrepreneurial, problem-solving and resourceful working style.
