District of Columbia Bar - Sr. Development Specialist
The D.C. Bar Pro Bono Program has an opening for a full-time Sr. Development Specialist (SDS) to work in a multi-faceted fundraising program for a nonprofit organization that mobilizes bar members to provide free legal services to the low-income community in the District of Columbia. The SDS functions as a member of a development team including outside consultants. This position reports to the Director of the D.C. Bar Pro Bono Program.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Works with Director and outside consultants to identify new fundraising strategies and develop overall fundraising strategy and annual income goals.
- Oversees and monitors development operations, including coordinating with outside consultants, assuring implementation of all planned activities and effective maintenance of all systems and procedures.
- Plans and implements the foundation and grant fundraising for Pro Bono Program activities and special projects; identifies potential foundation and other sources of grant funding, such as Bar Sections and voluntary bars, drafts letters of inquiry and proposals, tracks deadlines and coordinates submissions.
- Assists with the development of the Pro Bono Program budget, working with Director and other staff; works with program staff to conceptualize special projects and develop project budgets.
- Maintains historical records of grant funding solicitations and responses from foundations, corporations, etc.
- Tracks and assures adherence to deadlines for reports and deliverables to grant funders; prepares and coordinates submission of narrative and financial reports.
- Tracks, evaluates, and develops reports on the results of fundraising activities. Works with administrative assistant to prepare analyses and reports on results of fund-raising activities.
- Gathers and analyzes information on major donors, prospects, volunteers and law firms, using the Bar's member database and the Pro Bono Program's volunteer database.
- Oversees the major donor program. Responsible for identifying prospects, arranging meetings for Director and other leaders, directly soliciting donations, thanking donors, and assisting with follow-up.
- Supports the Director, Development Committee, and other volunteer leaders who participate in fundraising activities.
- Plans and implements donor cultivation activities through newsletters, the annual report, general correspondence, and special donor events.
- Represents Pro Bono Program with donors and community partners.
- Develops and updates Pro Bono Program's website content; writes other promotional and marketing materials such as brochures, articles and speeches.
- Takes the lead in marketing Pro Bono Program training sessions and other programs.
- Staffs special projects and committees.
OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university required.
- Minimum of five years of relevant work experience in development activities, preferably in a nonprofit organization; experience in a legal or human services setting a plus.
- Previous fundraising experience including: donor solicitations, foundation fundraising and grant writing, database management, financial reporting and budgeting.
- Experience with fundraising databases required and proficiency with Word and Excel.
- Excellent verbal and written communication, interpersonal and planning and organizational skills are a must.
- Must be a team player; able to prioritize and be deadline and detail oriented.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Under the Bar's compensation structure, this position is in the Marketing Job Family at the Sr. Specialist Level. This is an exempt position. Salary is commensurate with experience. The D.C. Bar has an excellent benefit package.
