Altarum is seeking a Director of Funds Development to play a leading role in the design, implementation/management and long-term evaluation a philanthropic funds development program that supports the Institute's growing independent research, mission demonstration and outreach/education activities. The position reports to the Senior Vice President and Chief Development Officer for the Institute. The incumbent will have sustained interaction with the Chief Executive Officer of the Institute, members of the Board of Trustees and other senior leaders in the Institute.
The principal responsibilities of the Funds Development Office and its Director will be four-fold:
- to continuously scan and qualify opportunities in the philanthropic marketplace that align with the Institute's core research, demonstration and outreach aims and securely “plant” those opportunities within the relevant research and technical units of the Institute for formal pursuit;
- to build the Institute's stature in the philanthropic community through the persistent cultivation and maintenance of relationships with priority funding prospects, development of needed collateral materials (case statements, etc);
- to serve as the information clearinghouse within the Institute, tracking all past and ongoing philanthropic pursuits to ensure appropriate coordination and absorption of “lessons learned” and;
- to provide an annual assessment of the Institute's progress/success in building profile in the community, securing funds and cementing long-term, strategic funding relationships that will serve the Institute's growing research, mission demonstration and outreach agenda.
The new Director of Funds Development will bring a wide experience base in the design, management and evaluation of development programs. The successful candidate will have deep credential and well established relationships in the health philanthropy community and will have a proven track record in cultivating and maintaining donor relationships. The successful candidate will be a strategic thinker and have exceedingly strong presentation skills, both written and verbal. Strong grant writing skills and a demonstrated history of securing health-related philanthropic grants are highly desired. This position is located in the Washington, DC/Alexandria area and requires frequent travel.
The Director will be personable, energetic and an effective communicator with a collaborative, team-oriented style and the ability to interact easily with diverse audience internally and externally. A keen sense of ethics, integrity and professionalism with a passion and commitment to the mission and value system of Altarum Institute will be essential in this role.
A minimum of a Bachelors degree is required with no less than ten years of experience in a funds development role akin to what is described above.
