Nontraditional Employment for Women (NEW) is a nonprofit community-based organization that trains economically disadvantaged women for nontraditional careers that provide a good living wage and benefits. NEW is the longest-running program of its kind in the nation, and has helped thousands of New York City women secure skilled, unionized jobs in the construction, energy, transportation, and facilities maintenance industries.
Position Overview
The ReNEW Construction Instructor provides training in basic construction principles and hands-on skills to NEW's program participants. ReNEW is a new green collar training program. Each ReNEW class will run for six weeks. In addition to creating construction projects for students, topics covered in class include safety, ruler reading and applied math, blueprint reading, tool identification and usage, woodworking, framing, and sheetrock projects. The Instructor is expected to work on-site from 7:30am to 4pm, Monday through Friday, depending on the class schedule.
- Manage and oversee 20 to 25 students in classroom and shop spaces.
- Prepare all written and hands-on class materials.
- Ensure that students are working in a safe manner.
- Submit grades and evaluate student performance at least twice per class.
- Evaluate student suitability for career selection.
- Maintain inventory of building materials and tools.
- Order new materials and tools as necessary.
The ReNEW Construction Instructor works closely with the ReNEW Coordinator and reports to the Director of Partnerships and Special Initiatives.
Requirements
Journey-level experience in the trades is preferred. Some experience in green construction is preferred.
- The following qualifications and experience are required:
- Experience instructing students in the construction trades;
- Ability and desire to manage a class of 25 adults;
- Adept at providing constructive oral and written feedback;
- Desire to work in a fast-paced environment;
- Ability to interact well with ReNEW Coordinator, other NEW staff, and partner agencies responsible for providing additional training;
- Ability to use Microsoft Office applications including Word and Outlook
