Contract Attorney

Boat People SOS, Inc. (BPSOS) is a national community-based organization serving primarily Vietnamese-American refugees and immigrants with program ranging from community development to legal services. Through its 15 locations, BPSOS provides a web of services to support individuals, families, and communities.

Boat People SOS, Inc. (BPSOS) seeks 2 contract attorneys to expand its legal assistance to survivors of Hurricane Ike. These positions are for 1 year.

Salary: Negotiable, depending on experience and qualifications, plus benefits.

Responsibilities:

1. Provide Vietnamese immigrants with legal services and referrals in matters including insurance litigation, landlord/tenant, FEMA appeals, contractor/home repair fraud, health care access, family law, and property law
2. Recruit, train and mentor pro bono attorneys, volunteers and local service providers assisting Vietnamese immigrants with legal issues relating to Hurricane Ike
3. Collaborate with other local, regional, and national providers to strengthen a coalition of service providers and law enforcement engaged in the issue of disaster relief;
4. Conduct community outreach and education on legal remedies available the Vietnamese Community in regards to disaster relief.

1. Clients receive effective, quality service in a timely, professional manner;
2. BPSOS is well-represented among public and private agencies; and
3. Collaborative networks are strengthened and improved to form a seamless network of services for survivors.

Requirements:

1. Juris Doctor from an accredited law school;
2. Admitted to practice law in Texas;
3. Experience working with immigrant populations
4. English and Vietnamese fluency preferred; and
5. Bicultural background preferred.
