Safe Space works with New York City’s most at risk youth and families to prevent foster care placements, build strong families, and promote self-sufficiency. Its unique holistic services are progressive and meet the ever-changing needs of the people it works with each day.

Safe Space serves over 10,000 children and families throughout Queens and Manhattan using an integrated system of programs in three core areas: Children and Family Services; Young Adult Services; and Community Health Services. The Agency has formed effective partnerships in the community and with a broad array of the City’s educational and social service organizations to fill the ever-widening gap in available services for disadvantaged and endangered children.

Position Summary:

Under supervision from the Educational Services Director, with latitude for independent judgment, the Social Worker will be responsible for providing mental health assessments and treatment services to students and their families within a middle and upper school setting.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Provide school-based mental health services to Junior High School students.
  • Conduct intake and orientation activities with students and family members;
  • Provide direct individual and group counseling to KidWise students
  • Attend SBST and in-house meetings and supervision
  • Maintain student counseling charts
  • Conduct home visits as needed
  • Develop a physical and mental health workshop series
  • Refer students to academic and personal support services as needed
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Education: 
MSW required, with LMSW or LCSW strongly preferred

Work Experience:
Minimum of three years of work experience

Knowledge & Skills:
Knowledge of family systems; strong writing, oral and interpersonal skills; the ability to work independently; strong computer literacy; the ability to occasionally work evening and Saturday hours; spanish speaking is preferred, but not required.
