DC Bar Foundation - Director of Development

The D.C. Bar Foundation (DCBF) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit whose mission is to fund and support legal representation of the poor and vulnerable in the District of Columbia. DCBF is looking for a Director of Development. Prefer full-time (35 hours/week). DCBF seeks aself-motivated, effective, experienced development professional to maintain and grow DCBF's development programs.

Education & Experience: College degree; 4-5 years of relevant experience in non-profit development work.

Description of Organization: The DC Bar Foundation is the largest private funder of civil legal services for the poor in the District of Columbia. The Foundation raises money from the legal community, and administers funds from the District as well as from DC's IOLTA program. These funds support (a) the District's poverty lawyer loan repayment assistance program, (b) grants to legal services organizations in the District, and (c) technical assistance to grantees. The Bar Foundation provides a small, collegial workplace where people with a commitment to social justice work to fund and support the legal services network in DC. More at: www.dcbarfoundation.org.

Duties: Position reports to the Executive Director. The Director of Development will be responsible for developing and implementing the Bar Foundation's development strategy. The Director of Development will be responsible for achieving DCBF's development goals.

Responsibilities:

  • Create and implement annual development plan and strategy.
  • Lead and manage the Bar Foundation's overall development efforts to meet annual target.
  • Work collaboratively with other staff, including Program & Development Associate and Director of Programs to support fundraising, communication, and marketing efforts.
  • Cultivate and nurture relationships with current and potential law firm, individual, corporate & foundation donors.
  • Write grant proposals and reports to corporate, foundation, and other funders.
  • Develop and grow our donor base; manage and implement annual giving campaign; manage and coordinate any special events; implement planned giving; cultivate major gifts, expand both print and online development activities; manage and implement other development initiatives undertaken by the Foundation.
  • Develop and manage Board, Development Committee, and Advisory Committee fundraising capacity.

Skills:

  • High energy, positive, "can-do" attitude, flexibility, teamwork, and attention to detail; high degree of initiative.
  • Strong verbal communications skills and demonstrated ability to write clearly and persuasively.
  • Demonstrated ability to think strategically and thorough understanding of strategic development.
  • Demonstrated ability to prospect, cultivate, and manage new donors and funders.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage and motivate Board and Development Committee.
  • Strong partnership-building and event planning skills.
  • Thorough understanding of all components of a diversified funding base.
  • Good computer skills and knowledge of data base programs.
  • Knowledge of the District of Columbia law firm community and legal services community a plus.

Compensation: Salary commensurate with experience; benefits package included.
