Asian Art Museum - Contemporary Art Program Associate (Part-Time)

Fixed-Term Position through December 2010, Part-time: 2 days (16 hrs) per week with possibility of expanded hours as program develops.

The Asian Art Museum is planning to launch a Contemporary Art Program with the goal of exploring contemporary Asian art in a regional as well as global context that both respects and transcends geography and ethnicity. Recently the museum received grant funding to begin the research and development of this exciting new program.

The Contemporary Art Program Associate, reporting to Jay Xu, Museum Director, will facilitate the formation and administration of the new Contemporary Art Program. The Associate will interface regularly with a wide range of museum departments including Curatorial, Marketing, Development, and Publications. The nature of the work requires flexibility, resourcefulness, and initiative, in addition to excellent interpersonal and organizational skills.

The Contemporary Art Program Associate will:

  • Convene regular meetings with the museum's internal team for the Contemporary Art Program; prepare agenda, minutes, and related documentation.
  • Conduct literature review of existing research on contemporary art programming and audiences; collaborate with the Marketing department to hire an external firm to conduct audience research.
  • Lead outreach for the formation of a Contemporary Art Advisory Panel to consist of leading curators of contemporary and Asian art, educators, artists, collectors, and arts administrators.
  • Organize bimonthly meetings for the Advisory Panel; arrange schedules, logistics, and process; work with panelists to document input.
  • Contact independent curators to solicit proposals for contemporary art projects; arrange presentations by curators to the Advisory Panel; compile feedback and recommendations.
  • Assist in developing pilot projects; may assist in curating small exhibitions.
  • Assist the Director in a variety of related projects and initiatives.

Minimum Qualifications

  • B.A. Degree in Art History or related field; advanced degree in Art History with specialization in contemporary art history strongly preferred
  • Requires knowledge of Asian contemporary art. Knowledge of worldwide contemporary art and traditional Asian art is very desirable
  • Demonstrated administrative, organizational, and logistical skills; extremely detail-oriented, meticulous, and conscientious in following through on assigned tasks; flexible and resourceful
  • Strong computer skills including knowledge of Microsoft Office
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to research, analyze, problem-solve, and recommend creative solutions
  • Ability to work independently and to exercise initiative, good judgment, tact, and diplomacy at all times
  • Ability to actively promote contemporary art and to establish and maintain positive and effective working relationships both internal and external to the museum
  • Self starter with proven ability to manage and independently prioritize multiple tasks while ensuring timely, high quality outcomes

Compensation: $22.25-$26.72/hr.*

*Please note: 1. New hires start at the beginning of this wage range. 2. This position is represented by SEIU 1021.
